Somebody has already mentioned Bicester North to Bicester Town. It's a fifteen minute walk but it currently can't be done with less than two changes (Oxford and either Banbury or Kings Sutton) by rail. That will drop to one change once the new chord opens. Are there any others which require two or more changes?

Dalston junction and Dalston Kingsland

Walthamstow central and Walthamstow Queens road

There are quite a few in London where the Gospel Oak to Barking line passes over ir under other routes.

In addition to those already mentioned you have:-

Seven Sisters to South Tottenham
Blackhorse Road to St James Street
Wanstead Park to Forest Gate
Woodgrange Park to Manor Park

Sadly no longer current, Banff and Banff Bridge were about a mile apart on either side of the River Deveron, but something like 100 rail miles apart over much of the GNOSR network.

By way of a slight variation to this thread (or a new one if you wish, mods)

What about stations next to each other which DO have a rail link to each other but don't have a direct service?
Since I was sitting on one of the below yesterday, I'll start with:
Oxenholme and Carnforth (you have to travel via Lancaster and double back)

Brighouse to Deighton.

As mentioned, the quickest way of getting between the high levels of Glasgow Queen Street and Central by rail requires changes at Greenfaulds and Whifflet.

But there is, of course, a much longer way with only one change - via Haymarket.

Wilnecote & Water Orton this direction only
I think that Wilnecote - Coleshill Parkway is also valid

King George V and Gallions Reach on the DLR are about 10 minutes walk apart but by rail you need to go via Canning Town.

Canary Wharf (Jubilee) and Canary Wharf DLR/Heron Quays. Canary Wharf Crossrail to Poplar/West India Quay will be similar.

Shadwell Overground to Shadwell DLR (Whitechapel -> Monument/Bank possibly quickest), Tower Gateway/Tower Hill/Fenchurch Street (likely interchange at West Ham I guess) and South Hampstead to St Johns Wood (Euston -> Green Park) are other London examples. Sudbury Hill and Sudbury Hill Harrow is possibly more extreme; then there are the West Hampstead stations.

Sadly no longer current, Banff and Banff Bridge were about a mile apart on either side of the River Deveron, but something like 100 rail miles apart over much of the GNOSR network.

Similarly Woolwich Arsenal and North Woolwich used to require a lengthy journey, particularly if restricted to National Rail lines.

Until a few years ago there was no direct service between North Shields and South Shields, and even today rail is not the quickest.

Portsmouth Harbour to Ryde Pier Head is probably stretching "nearby" a bit far. Also significantly stretching the definition is Llandudno and Victoria, and the Victoria and Summit stations on the Great Orme tramway.

10 minutes for King George to Gallions? That's quicker than I could run it. I know, as I have tried that very run! 15 minutes walk sounds more like it.

Anyway, yes, perhaps including a tourist attraction tramway is stretching the topic a little far... but it has got me thinking, is it the steepest rail based transport in the UK? The roads up there are also very steep and I have often wondered whether they hold some sort of UK record.

Brighouse to Deighton.

That's a particularly strange one, as if you change at Huddersfield you pass through Deighton on your way. Before the split of the Grand Tour, it was possible without a change- but still passing through before reversing at HUD!

Tilbury town and Gravesend are less than a mile apart across the Thames but require a long trip back into London via rail.

That's why I thought it would be a good one to mention.

The "Grand Tour" can still be made, as a few trains still go between Wakefield and Leeds, via Bradfordistan, or Selby to Wakefield via same. But, as you say, all reversing at Huddersfield, and on a Saturday, waiting around for 25 mins.

Note that there USED to be a ticket easement allowing people travelling Scunthorpe line to Goole line to double back to Doncaster. This has been removed so I understand. All passengers must change at Hatfield & Stainforth.

Easement 000047 allowing you to double back between Stainforth and Doncaster is still there in the recent Easements list published 09/10/2013. Did it go away and then come back?

Settle and Giggleswick springs to mind!

Baildon and Saltaire are pretty close and a change of train is required. Same with Wakefield Kirkgate and Outwood.

Burnley Manchester Road - Burnley Barracks/Central

10-15 minute walk at max, but about an hour and half on the train changing at Accrington (unless your lucky and the Blackpool South train is running early of the York train is running late)

I always found BYM to BNc about 10 mins walk as it was downhill but 15 mins in the other direction due to the steepness of Manchester Road itself.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
North Camp and Ash Vale are only 10 mins walk apart but an hours journey in between by rail via Guildford or Ash.
