New Cross and New Cross Gate
If you include London Underground, they can be really common in London

Would it be possible to change at Kirkham & Wesham station?
Isn't the point that if there were direct services the wouldn't be the NEED for two stations?
Edinburgh Haymarket and Waverley? Direct service between both but two stations.
Stratford to Stratford International

Many interesting pairs of stations have been listed.
But which pairs are furthest apart by rail?
(a) if travelling on normal passenger services (changing trains allowed)
(b) if travelling on a railtour and reversing and the use of any line (passenger or freight) is allowed
(c) if travelling on a railtour and reversing is not allowed
Use distance on foot divided by distance by rail as the measure.

(in response to #23) The ferry crossing itself takes 30 minutes and it's a half-hour drive at the very least (22m). Not sure they are "in close proximity" even by Highland standards.
One I can think of is Blackpool North to Blackpool South. It takes about half an hour to get from one station to the other by tram. This consists of a ten minute walk from North Station to North Pier tram stop, a fifteen minute tram journey to Waterloo Road, then about a ten minute walk to South Station.
If you do the journey by train, it is the best part of an hour and fifteen minutes, as you have to go out to Preston and back in.
Barnetby and Ulceby are two villages just six miles apart in the wilds of North Lincolnshire.
And on the other side of Scunthorpe, you have the 2 stations in Thorne. To travel between them by train, you need to change at Doncaster, where you'll have a ~50 minute wait.
