Barnetby and Ulceby are two villages just six miles apart in the wilds of North Lincolnshire. Both are blessed with a railway station but there is no direct rail link between the two.
In this instance, a passenger need only take a 9-minutes ride from Barnetby to Habrough for the 4-minutes ride to Ulceby.
Are there instances where the journey between two stations in relatively close proximity but without a direct rail link between them involves a much longer and more complicated journey to travel by rail from one to the other?

Oulton Broad North to Oulton Broad South? 2 minutes into Lowestoft, half an hours wait and then 2 minute journey back

Wigan Wallgate & Wigan Northwestern.

Takes two minutes to walk (longer if you stop at Galloways for a pie of course)

One I can think of is Blackpool North to Blackpool South. It takes about half an hour to get from one station to the other by tram. This consists of a ten minute walk from North Station to North Pier tram stop, a fifteen minute tram journey to Waterloo Road, then about a ten minute walk to South Station.

If you do the journey by train, it is the best part of an hour and fifteen minutes, as you have to go out to Preston and back in.

Another example I can think of is Bradford Interchange to Bradford Forster Square and Wigan North Western to Wigan Wallgate.

Wigan Wallgate to Wigan North Western. About 200 metres apart, but as of the current timetable to get between them you'd usually need to go via Manchester Piccadilly and Warrington Bank Quay, taking over an hour.

I suppose you've also got London King's Cross and London St Pancras which are next door to each other but require a long diversion to get between each other.

Upper Tyndrum and Tyndrum Lower. Over an hour by train, changing at Crianlarich. About a quarter of a mile apart IIRC

You could get the WGN service to Hindley and get one back to WGW but not sure of the timings, think your pie would definitely be cold by the time you arrived though ;)

There must be loads of these!
Some that immediately spring to mind:

New Mills Central to New Mills Newtown...

Warrington Central to Warrington Bank Quay.....

Runcorn to Runcorn East....

There's only one train a day that goes from Wigan NW and calls at Hindley.

I know, I worked it the other day.

08.20 - WNW to MCV

Takes 5 minutes to Hindley, so you could get the 08.39 back to Wallgate arriving at 08.45.

Your pie would still be rather cold, but as a bonus you may get to see the Peacock that has turned up at Hindley this week.

From a North Lincolnshire viewpoint how about Barton/Barrow Haven/New Holland to Brough/Ferriby/Hessle/Hull?

Daisy Hill and Westhoughton.
10 minute walk but have to go to Hindley and back via train.

Westhoughton and Horwich Parkway. 5 Minute drive but have to go via Bolton.

Chorley and Euxton Balshaw lane aren't far away either

  • Farnborough Main - Farnborough North: About five mins walk apart, but the shortest rail route means either a reversal at Basingstoke and running through Reading, or a double-reversal via Woking and Guildford.
    .
  • Tamworth (High level) - Tamworth (Low level): Similar to Farnborough. Operationally, both stations are separate entities AFAIK, and the closest reversal route IME is via Birmingham NS and Rugby.
    .
  • Mallaig - Kyle of Localsh: These two are only a short distance away as the crow flies and take maybe half an hour by car via Skye including the ferry crossing. (Took me about six hours on foot a few years ago, but I was taking it easy on an overnight anyway and not rushing.) - By rail, this requires travel via Inverness, Aberdeen, Perth and Glasgow QS, and takes over EIGHT hours!<D

Does Dorchester West to Dorchester South count? 6 Minutes walking distance but no services between the two listed on booking sites.

It's about 20 to 30 minutes with a change at Upwey, depending on connection times.

The reason booking websites won't give you an itinerary is that there is no such ticket as Dorchester West to Dorchester South. If you add "via Upwey" then it'll give you an itinerary (but tell you you need two tickets).

Burscough Junction to Burscough Bridge or Hoscar.
Burscough Bridge to Burscough Junction or Rufford.
Rufford to Hoscar or Burscough Bridge.
Hoscar to Burscough Junction or Rufford.

I think that just about covers all the permutations.

Edit, a similar set of circumstances also appears to apply at Greenbank, Hartford, Cuddington and Acton Bridge.

The ferry crossing itself takes 30 minutes and it's a half-hour drive at the very least (22m). Not sure they are "in close proximity" even by Highland standards.

Back to the original question: there are umpteen examples in South London - Penge E and W, New Beckenham and Beckenham Hill, Streatham and Streatham Hill (in that direction especially), Queenstown Road to Wandsworth Road, Bromley N to S.

Maidstone E to W or Barracks is a particularly extreme one... ditto Dorking to Dorking West

Sherburn in Elmet and South Milford although in practice South Milford does, at times, appear to serve both places.

Quite a few examples in south Wales, due to the way that the different valleys have parallel lines going north/south, but nothing going east/west.

For example, Ebbw Vale to Abergavenny is ten miles, twenty minutes by car, two hours by train (going down to Cardiff and back again).

There's a direct train between those two (surprisingly). It takes 23 minutes.

1729 Gunnislake to Liskeard.

Ah yes, I did that train once, confusing my app no end and as a result left a few stations 15 early! To be fair it really is just a Gunnislake - Plymouth and a Plymouth - Liskeard service rolled into one.
