TRIVIA: TIPLOC codes where the code does not match the location name

I have no issue with the concept of TIPLOCs. But more the random nature of them. Like CRS codes they should have a logic and should be an even number of characters (I.e every TIPLOC is 6 letters).

Why though? They are just a code to define a location and subsequently to provide links for running times. There is a logic in that they have to have a minimum of 4 characters.

Why not? Why make something more complex than it needs to be. Simplification and unification should be attempt in a system that is used for a database of similar items. Sometimes vowels are missing, sometimes they aren’t. Sometimes it’s a full name where it fits, sometimes it isn’t. It’s baffling.

And why is Gatwick Airport LGW if you arrive by plane, but GTW if you leave by train?

Why some locations are 4 letters and others 9 with no rhyme or reason baffles me! Even last century surely standardisation was a good idea!

Fundamentally, they're an internal code and as long as everybody knows what it means it doesn't matter exactly how it's reached.

Not sure, but these are not TIPLOC codes. CRS codes start with X for junctions, no idea on Y, J probably for Junction.

The Airport is London Gatwick Airport, but the station is just Gatwick Airport. But Airport codes are a different beast, look up CGP Grey on YouTube.
I believe CRS codes are required/intended to share the same first letter as the full station name.

CRS Codes were created for the 1980s reservations system, with the general principle being that the first letter of the code would be the same as the first letter of the station name.

There was a need to also use these codes for some non-passenger locations, and it was decided that those places the codes would all be in the "X" series to avoid any confusion.
