Trivia: Surprising settlements with/without Tourist Information Centres

I don't think Wigan has a Tourist Information Centre anymore after going into town this morning. Most of you probably wouldn't think Wigan would have had one but it did exist.

Are there any non-touristy towns with a TIC?

Most reasonably-sized towns had Tourist Information Centres up until around 15 years ago. New Labour and then Tory cuts did for many of them though.

Penzance had a Tourist Information Centre, which closed. After a year or two the National Trust opened a 'Visitor Centre' in the same building, situated between the rail and bus stations, but it is very much geared towards promoting NT properties, even though other information is available there if you know what to ask for! Leaflets for other attractions are mainly kept in drawers/cupboards. It doesn't open on Sundays, but then neither did the TIC.

Shepton Mallet in Somerset has one (or at least did when I lived there for a year in 2011).

The Visitor Information Centre is now closed. However, many of its services are available from Luton Travel Centre (located in Starbucks and pictured above) opposite Luton station or the Town Hall reception.

Although it seems Dunstable does...

I can't imagine my home town of Rotherham has many tourists. I think their Tourist Information Centre mainly helps with...

These days most "TICs" seem to be no more than a leaflet rack in a library.

Of the "proper" TICs that I know Whitby has closed and the London area has only two at St Pauls and Greenwich.

On the other hand Stowmarket has a good one attached to the Museum of East Anglian Life and, unless it closed this year, Waltham Abbey has one. The St Albans site was being refurbished last time that I was there and I don't know if it reopened fully.

Huntingdon used to have one, it's still signposted as such on the A14 (for now...)

Though I would add that there are probably only two "touristy" destinations at best.

Newport, South Wales used to have one as part of the Library, Museum and Art Gallery complex.

It closed around six / seven (?) years ago, when the justification for closure was that there was one at the Magor Services on the M4, some ten miles away. It's still signposted as being where it was, though ....!

That comment did make me chuckle, in the same way when anyone asks for 'London Station'.

I don't remember Reading ever having one, although I remember Reading postcards being sold in the Post Office on Friar Street which always made me laugh.
