Martins Heron, Berkshire which is the stop after Ascot but before Bracknell on the London Waterloo - Reading route.

Usually, at the moment it is class 450's with sometimes the odd Steam Special passing through on an odd occasion.

In the past it has been class 458 and on occasions class 455 units.

Only road vehicles pass my flat, but about 200m away there are 185s which can be heard at times, along with 142s/144s/150s/153s/155s and 158s. No freight though as it all goes via Horbury. From my parents' home (where I'm currently cat-sitting) all I can hear is the whistles of travel-kettles on the old Clayton West branch.

We directly overlook the Powderhall branchline in Edinburgh so we get daily bird's eye view of the Edinburgh binliner train hauled by class 67s and the occasional 66.

There where three attempts to build the line which would have run past my property, needless to say I can picture in my mind; "Carlisle" the 0-6-0ST built by Kitson & Co. in 1868, steaming by on the Bishops Catle Railway Montgomery section, and the hold up of traffic on the A490!:p

Not close to home, but close to work-GWML, never seen a DMU other than the NR yellow one, seen more steam than units. Seen one XC 220, plenty HSTs, locos over the years classes 20, 31, 37, 40, 46 (DIT), 47, 50 (DIT), 56, 57, 59, 60, 66, 67, 70

I used to live in a flat overlooking Didcot Parkway, between 2001 and early 2004 - plenty of variety from my kitchen window. HSTs, Turbos and EWS 66s a plenty - but also 47s on XC, 158s (Central Trains version on loan to Thames Trains, Wales and Borders ran a daily Maesteg service), 67s on Postal trains too if memory serves me correctly. 37s, 56s, 58s and 60s all kicking around too. Recall 168s on diversion, 310s off to Kineton for storage, even a 508 in the yard one day being hauled to Eastleigh.

Now, alas, I can only hear trains from my house in Exeter now... mainline is a short cycle ride away, but variety is poor.

I overlook Reading Main Line East just out of the station. Regularly see 43s, 59s, 60s, 66s, 70s, 165s, 166s, 180s, 221s, 450s(?) along with a healthy collection of charters both steam and diesel, and track vehicles (which includes the rail grinder and a 37).

Along with anything else I've missed!!

Quite a lot really, have to go up to the top of the garden to see the railway clearly but I can see across to Cowley Bridge. We get classes 143,150,153,158,220,221,HST,66s,57s at night on the sleeper, occasionally a 70 or a 56, steam and other railtour stuff. Quite lucky really, 37s on the test trains are the ones that really raise the echoes though and a Castle/King on a still evening heading up the Exe valley on a railtour.

What's the situation with the Cowley Bridge Inn these days? being adjacent to the famous junction it has featured in so many railway shots over the last few decades.

Quite a selection near me.

20, 37, 43, 56, 60, 66, 70
150 153 158 170 220 221

Plus the odd 31, 47, 57, 67, and sometimes 159, and according to RRT this week 165's on empty stock movements.

WEST Highland Line passes our back garden so therefore
Scotrail 156
Caladonian Sleeper (GB Railfreight) 73
DBS 67 (Sleeper)
DBS (Glen Douglas Fuel), GB Railfreight (Alcan, The Royal Scotsman) 66
West Coast railway 37, 47 & 57 (Charters)
DRS 47 & 57 (Northern Belle)
and the odd steam engine going up and down to relieve Jacobite service

At the back of my garden:

Usual: 455 and 456.

Occasional: 450 ( either vice 455 or on diversions ).

Infrequent - passenger: 444 ( diversions only ).

Infrequent - other: 31, 37, 66, 70 have all been past in recent months; probably 73s as well.

Since I bought the house - but no longer used: 411s, 412s, 421s, 423s on diversions. The occasional steam loco on a charter; had 71000 once but I chose to see that at Epsom station itself. The very first train I saw on the day I moved in, literally just as I was unlocking the door, was the class 71 on a railtour called "The Green Flasher".

I can lie in bed in the morning and see 43, 180, 165, 166, xc voyagers plus 66 mostly and occasionally 70, 60 on freight. It's a nice way to wake up !

Passenger trains I can see tend to be 142s, 150s, 156s, 185s and 319s on Northern, 185s and 350s on TPE and 221s and 390s on VTWC - quite a variety.

Looking back it really is garbage now. Back in the 80's at the bottom of the garden I had 08's, 20's, 25's, 31's, 37's, 40's, 43's, 45's, 47's, 56's, 58's, 60's, 81's, 85's, 86's, 87's and 90's. Plus all the multiple unit madness. Just get the regular clockface EMU's and DMU's now. Don't even get as many stopping trains per hour since the 303's and 304's stopped running to Crewe. I know that every generation thinks the one they grew up in was the best but hey, lets be honest, whether you liked steam or diesel there was a bit more variety than there is now. That is 17 different classes on a pretty regular basis, some stopped operating before others started but lets face it, it was better than 7 now, and the most varied we get now are the Northern services which hardly set the heart a flutter. I get excited these days if one of the East Midlands services has a 156 in the construct.

Quite a lot in the last few years actually. A new landlord took over called Ken and he's really turned it round, they do live music, good beer and food, not gourmet but good pub food and well priced and the garden is a great place to have a pint and watch the trains go past. There's a load of work just started on the St David's side of the bridge for flood defences etc, I hope the pub gets some protection because it didn't go to well a few years ago and we haven't had that kind of weather for a while but it'll probably happen again at some point. Oh and he's renamed it The New Inn.

Many thanks for that, its a shame they've renamed it though.

I can't see any stock from where I live, although I can hear the horns of 323s, 170s and Voyagers near university and Give Ways stations

Not quite past our house as much to my 3 year olds disgust we don't back on the MML but it is only 5 mins walk from our house so many an avaning spent on our local platform watching trains.

We got the normal 153, 156, 158 and 170s on locals plus 222s and HST. On the freight side we get 60s, 66s, occasionally 56 and 47s and we even had a 70s not too long ago. (Plus a 68 on a charter train too).

Not that much variety but enough to keep my little boy happy and guessing as to what will be next.

I see nothing. My nearest railway line is about 1.5 miles away from my house in deepest darkest Colchester.

The line at the bottom of the hill where I live mainly sees freights hauled by Re420s, passenger service was discontinued in 2004 :(

The line does see diversions when the Heitersberg tunnel is under a possession, then you frequently see Re460 push-pull units and Re450 double decker stock.

There is a passenger working that you tend to see most mornings at around 9:30 but it's not one I'd like to take under any circumstances as it's the jail train moving prisoners to the Strafanstalt at Lenzburg (the main jail in Aargau).

My flat backs on to a mainly freight line, but I also get the following;

142/144/150/153/158 Knottingley-Wakefield Kirkgate services (Northern).

180 Bradford-King's Cross services (GC).

HST King's Cross-Leeds (VTEC - one late night service).

170/185 Sheffield-Manchester Airport (TPE - middle of the night, both ways.

222 Plymouth-Leeds (XC - one late night service).

I also get ECS movements to/from Crofton, and Neville Hill, in the form of 170/185/222/HST. I also get a Northern ECS from Sheffield-Wakefield Kirkgate in a morning.

Freight trains I see a lot of, and I've even seen a steam train out there. The line is that close I could easily throw a tennis ball at a passing train, which of course I wouldn't.

ETA: Forgot to add that 180's also stable at Crofton.

From my window I see GWR Praries, Halls, Manors, Class 33s, 35s, 47s, and all sorts of interesting steam and diesels on excursions to the WSR .
