Trivia: Stations without ticket purchasing facilities

Correct. None of the stations north of Machynlleth have TVMs. When TfW gave their guards new ticket machines that only issue paper roll tickets, it meant that it is now not possible to buy a ticket to some destinations either before boarding or from the guard. When I complained to TfW about this, they told me that they would be installing TVMs on all the Cambrian stations in the next couple of years. Seven years later, and nothing seems to have happened

Does TfW not have the ability to allow guards to sell as TOD for the rare occasion someone requests a ticket from a Cambrian station across London?

Sudbury & Harrow Road and Sudbury Hill Harrow don't have any ticket purchasing facilities since the Permit to Travel machines were removed. All they have is validators for those using Contactless, Oyster or Smartcards.

A number of stations in the Bristol area like Bedminster don't seem to bother either!

Barmouth on the Cambrian Coast definitely has a ticket machine on the southbound platform. Used it myself on a Sunday morning when the Tourist Information Office is closed. Issues credit card sized tickets.

GWR have quite a few stations with no ticket vending machines. The Weymouth line (including Yeovil Pen Mill which only has a ticket office, no TVM), many stations on the Barnstaple, Exmouth, Gunnislake, Looe, Newquay, Falmouth, St Ives and Severn Beach branches do not have TVMs. I think a few smaller stations on the main lines also don’t have them.

Yes - none at King's Nympton. They added them at Topsham in about 2015. They do have them at the new Marsh Barton station.

Blackpool South currently has no ticket office or TVM, does it, but supposedly has somewhere over 110,000 passengers per year?

Don't think there's any ticket purchasing facilities at Hellifield, either, but that doesn't see quite as many passengers (= 29,000?)

Indeed, albeit maybe most passengers actually buying the tickets, are likely travelling to Blackpool South (rather than from there).

Yes - none at King's Nympton. They added them at Topsham in about 2015. They do have them at the new Marsh Barton station.

Topsham TVM was installed in 2006/7!

I haven't been there for a few years so I don't know if it still does, but I actually remember being there and a member of staff had the machine open to maintain it, put in more ticket cards, etc.

Polesworth too, not that it really needs one.

I assume most of the stations on the Shotts Line with only an hourly service don't have ticket machines. When I used the train from Slateford and Wester Hailes towards Glasgow, I had to buy tickets from the guard.

…Unfortunately, the new National Rail Conditions of Travel make a Permit to Travel technically useless.

RDG guidelines stemming from the NRCoT change mean the PERTIS at Holton Heath (and anywhere else one still exists) should be covered up anyway!
