Wasn't the subway at Newcastle just there for the use of Post Office staff any their trolleys of mail?

There was (is?) another subway at Newcastle, near the east end of the main train shed. I think that was the original post office facility. Possible that the current passenger subway only came with the works to provide the extra island P5-P8, previously the only main island had ramped access, I cannot remember the details, but it may have happened during the electrification.

Doncaster? There's the main subway and now a footbridge connecting P3 to P0, but also similar to above a second footbridge on the London end of the platforms being for staff use only.

Dewsbury had a subway once, now disused. Don't think both were in use concurrently though.

Leeds pre-rebuild had the current narrow Eastern footbridge along with a central subway (main stairway was approximately where the circulating area between the ticket gates and stairs to the new footbridge are today. The subway was wide enough for today but was stepped only, and rather smelly as it contained the gents' toilets!

There is a third bridge at Leeds which is not open to the public, though it used to be the only step-free access to many platforms (though not P16 and 17 as they were only added in the rebuild).

Doncaster is a particularly weird one with the platform 0 situation.

It's extraordinary. However long does a wheelchair passenger take to get there from the main entrance, which seems to involve 4 lifts.

It's the old one I was thinking of - I didn't know there was a new one!

Birmingham New Street subway again for staff use only now

They sometimes use the subway to Transfer passengers who can't use the stairs at new street (well they did 3 months ago!) Also new street has technically got 2 footbridges too, Also Birmingham Snow hill also has a subway and technically a footbridge too :)

Does Kings Cross work? Can you go into the underground at one side, effectively go underneath and emerge on the other?

Where is the subway at Crewe? I have always used the bridges never seen a subway.

At the South end of the platforms - also gives access to the new exit on Weston Road. It has always been there, but only accessible to the public recently.

Forest Hill has a subway under the tracks, although it's not really part of the station, a lot of people use it to get to the opposite platform in preference to the footbridge.

Swindon, but the footbridge should only be used by those employed by the Research Councils

And, for those who don't know it, they point in opposite directions (i.e. the bridge heads north from the island platform, the subway heads south). The subway-stairs/lift-bridge route is a right of way for Research Councils employees.

Swindon used to have another north-facing bridge but it was never used and disappeared recently to clear the area for electrification.

I assume the door right at the end of the trainshed by platform 1 leads to a subway. But the passenger subway also only goes through to platform 3/4, to get to the "new" island you have to use the bridge.

Towards the London end of the station, over/between platforms 1 and 2. Only accessible by lift, if I remember correctly.
Yes you are correct, the footbridge at Stoke is at the London end of the platform, it's the way I take my mum if she isn't up to negotiating the steps in the subway. Also used by buggies, wheelchairs and passengers with lots of luggage.

Do you mind I am from Surrey
Ascot. A subway links all three platforms and a bridge links platforms 1 & 2 (unless they extended the bridge lately)
Ascot now has a bridge with lifts linking all three platforms. That subway was a bit of a pain as to get to P1 you had to go outside the station and com back in confused numerous people.

I also found that subway a rather tight fit if you're over 6ft!
Is it still open?

Dorking. The bridge is fairly recent and has lifts; the subway is pretty cramped, but strikes me as possibly being more popular with commuters.

Hyndland has a subway giving access both to Gartnavel hospitals and towards Hyndland (the station replaced one on a short branch into Hyndland proper). There's a bridge linking it to S, which is I suppose part of Jordanhill. However the station was getting an access upgrade, so things may have changed since I was last there.

Harrow-on-the-Hill is a station with both a footbridge and a subway.

At Raynes Park the subway is outside the barriers but is also the step-free route between the two island platforms.

Twyford footbridge is also like that on P4/5, having to go just outside the station into the car park to use it.

The footbridge over platform 1 has now been removed.

Newport technically has both, though you can no longer access the station from the subway.

West Byfleet used to have a concrete footbridge along with the subway, but it was removed a few years ago. I think it was an Exmouth Junction one.

East Croydon had both until they closed the subway at the northern end (actually mid-platform) and replaced it with the footbridge and (unreliable) lifts. The subway - ramped and so step free - was much easier and quicker to get between P3-4 and P5-6 for tight connections.
