There are a couple of booked services between Piccadilly and Buxton where 3 units (typically 150s) are coupled for moving stock. When this happens, the rear unit must be completely locked out as the service is too long for most of the Buxton line stations.

Similar happens on summer weekends between Blackpool South and Colne when double sets are the norm: both open west of Preston, but locked out of use east thereof owing to short platforms at some intermediate stations.

I believe Stonehaven is shorter than a HST.

VTEC advertise it as having a short platform when HST 2+9 call...

Didn't realise Pendolinos did SDO. I thought they had extended all the platforms.

I think the last few weren't done as listed above.

I'm near positive Haymarket can take a full Pendolino or HST/225 without any problems on both length and positioning.

Not sure about a Pendolino but HSTs are advertised as being longer than the platform.

Lot's up here I can think of:

Beauly
Connon Bridge
Balmossie
Golf Street
Dunkeld & Birnam
Blair Atholl
Dalwhinnie
Newtonmore
Carrbridge
Gleneagles
Dunblane
Falkirk Grahamston
Carnoustie
Inverkeithing
Kirkcaldy
Markinch
Ladybank
Cupar
Leuchars

Points to clarify
-Stations where at least 1 platform renders a calling service; "too long" counts, as long as said service calls at the platform which results in at least 1 passenger door inoperable.
-In the instance of locomotive hauled stock, a station does not qualify as long as all passenger doors are operable on the platform, even if the locomotive over-rides.
-Stations qualify only if there is a scheduled service which overides the calling platform.

What trains are too long for Cupar?

East Coast HST's are too long for Haymarket platform 1.

Similar with the once a day Glasgow VTEC service at Haymarket, advertised on the calling poster (the ones in the doorways) with having short platforms.

Similar with HSTs, GWR HSTs in deepest darkness Cornwall and the evening peak ones towards Westbury (i.e. the one which used to carry on to Bristol via Westbury north curve) had several stops with short platforms

Feltham has the same level crossing issue, but it is proposed to solve this by closing the crossing altogether and extending the platform.
Could the Datchet problem be solved, if the platform cannot be extended at the other end, by changing the signalling that up trains overrun the platform, clearing the crossing, and SDO not opening the front rather than the back two coaches?
Possibly yes, but on SWT it appears the front of the train is always platformed. Happy to be corrected.
At Datchet there appears to be room for the up plat to be extended; but a signal may need to be moved?

Mk. 4 sets heading towards Skipton need the passenger coach nearest the 91 (which is at the back after reversal at Leeds) locking out of use. Not sure whether this is for Shipley, Keighley or both.

A few comments on some of the Scottish stations listed here.

The only Highland Main Line call unable to accommodate 2×170 is Newtonmore, so equally it won't be able to deal with the full sleeper or HST.

Blair Atholl, Dalwhinnie and Carrbridge may well be short but I've never heard of a problem at Dunkeld, maybe it does struggle with one time per week HST, but it holds the sleeper comfortably. Here platform height rather than length is the major challenge. :(

As many times as I've boarded or passed through on full length HSTs I've never noticed an issue at Gleneagles, Kirkcaldy or Leuchars. Grahamston and Inverkeithing are well known as short on the other hand.

Gleneagles can accommodate 7.5 Mk3 coaches on both platforms so the North facing Power car and the following carriage and a half hangs off the end.

Leuchars has 1 platform which can only accommodate 8.5 Mk3 coaches, so at least 1 passenger door hangs off at the end as opposed to the adjacent platform which can only just take a full rake of Mk3 coaches.

Kirkcaldy is merely an assumption as it's platforms are similar in length to Inverkeithing.

Gunton, Roughton Road, Sheringham, Brundall Gardens*, Buckenham, Haddiscoe(dn), Berney Arms**, Spooner Row.

All the above are for 3-car 170s. *Short hauled set must use guards door in up direction. **Use of local door only on all DMUs.

Loch Eil Outward Bound is a short platform which is operated on local (rear) door only

There is a station between Three Bridges and Hassocks which cannot take a 12 car Class 700 from what I can recall

Quite a number of stations on the line to Pembroke Dock (including the terminus!) cannot take a full HST set when it runs that way in summer

It is Balcombe that you are thinking of. The Northbound platform can take 12 coaches but the Southbound platform can only take 8 coaches.

Meadowhall when a 2x3 car 185 calls. This will be happening even more when South Transpennine gets more doubled up services.

Add in also Chinley, Dore & Totley, Kirk Sandall, Hatfield & Stainforth, Thorne South, Crowle, Althorpe, Grimsby Town (granted most of those only actually get 2x185 with the rear one locked out of use but still)
