If you mean Smethwick Galton Bridge (low level) and Smethwick Rolfe Street, they're about 55 chains distant.

Smethwick Galton Bridge (high level) and the now closed Smethwick West station (closed ~1996) look to be around 16 chains apart. However, were they ever open simultaneously so that one could actually travel directly between the two stations?
There was an overlap period because the closure of Smethick West was messed up so it remained open (into 1996) after Galton Bridge opened in 1995, with one train per week calling.
What I haven't been able to determine is whether that one train per week called at both stations. However, the OP criterion was "linked by track" not "linked by direct train" so it definitely qualifies and must be one of the shortest distances.

Although not entirely clear whether the OP was contemplating currently open stations. Smethwick West closed 1996. If historic stations are also in scope, how about Manchester Victoria and Manchester Exchange in the period immediately prior to 1929?

Why has no one mentioned Wakefield Westgate to Wakefield Kirkgate? Only 74 chains between them. Although as the line between the two of them is almost a right angle its about 56 chains as the crow flies.

Other close ones include Sholing to Woolston in Southampton 47 chains.

The OP's restriction 'For the purposes of this post, the Tube and other metro services are excluded' excludes the blog by Diamond Geezer 'Britain's Shortest Rail journey'

Probably because there are quite a few closer track-connected station pairs up and down the country. Still a good shout, though!

Whitchurch (Glamorgan) to Ty Glas might be the most stations within a mile distance as it's about a mile between them and there are 2 immediate stations.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Although nowhere near the closest stations, I was once told that at 6 miles Tamworth to Lichfield Trent Valley are the closest stations where trains reach 125mph while stopping at both. I don't know how true this is my guess is no but I could be wrong.

The class 805s which stop at both are supposed to be a bit nippier than the 390s so maybe they could do it in theory - but these services are running on the slow lines between Tamworth and Lichfield, so does the line speed even allow it? AFAIK the maximum on the slows is 100mph so the answer would be definite "no" if this is correct.

Garscadden - Scotstounhill is another contender in Strathclyde. Not quite as closely spaced together as Central Low Level & Argyle Street on the same line, but pretty close.

Under half a mile. RailMiles site has it as just 38 chains. Ballpark two minute journey time, if that.

Yeah, I didn't think it was much more than 40 chains.

As noted by @D6130 a few pages back however, most of the stations on the Maryhill Line are very closely spaced together. Kelvindale - Maryhill (including Maryhill Park Junction) is a mere 36 chains, though the clear winner on this line has to be Maryhill - Summerston at a mere 28 chains, pipping Summerston-Gilshochill (32 chains) and Possilpark-Ashfield (30 chains) to the post.

If we're including closed stations/lines, what about St Pauls (later Blackfriars - which Thameslink moved a bit to the south) to Ludgate Hill on the LCDR City Extension, I think only 8 chains (160 m - according to the RCH 1915 Junction Diagrams)? (Unlike Manchester Victoria/Exchange, very definitely two seperate stations)

Oulton Broad South and Oulton Broad North? Not connected directly, but require a change in Lowestoft (except for the one new direct train in the morning). 0.7mi/15 minute walk according to Google. You can even watch your own train pass over the swing bridge (running from Ipswich) before walking to Oulton Broad North and catching it on the service to Norwich.

This will be rejected as outside the OP's scope and rightly so.

If we're going down that route (no pun intended) there are tons of examples, the best probably being the St. Budeaux stations which are literally across the road from each other.

Not a winner, but I have found at least one service timed for a minute and a half between Worcester Shrub Hill and Worcester Foregate street. Realtime trains link
The service in question is the 0750 London Paddington to Great Malvern.
Sorry, can't quote exactly (my device won't let me copy due to the formatting) but the link shows the working timetable having the train leave Shrub Hill at 0959 1/2 and arrive at Foregate Street at 1001.

An interesting little anomaly - Realtime Trains, as demonstrated in the attached photograph, suggests that the distance from Bedford to Bedford St Johns is just 18 chains, or under a quarter of a mile. However, as per Google Maps, it's probably closer to three quarters of a mile or so, being a fair bit longer than Wallasey Grove Road to Wallasey Village at 25 chains. I know that St Johns has been re-sited, but its new location is closer to Bedford Midland than the old station would have been, not further away, so how does this come about?

Additionally, it's a three-minute journey time, which, at 18 chains, would mean an average speed of 4.5 miles per hour, which doesn't particularly strike me as realistic.

Back on topic, a couple from the North London Line that I haven't yet seen mentioned are Brondesbury and Brondesbury Park (35 chains on RTT and timed for one minute start-to-stop), while Highbury & Islington to Canonbury (which is not ELL-exclusive so arguably doesn't count as a metro under the rules in post #90), also timed for one minute start-to-stop, is 33 chains. Brondesbury to West Hampstead is just over half a mile, at 41 chains.

Ardrossan Town and Ardrossan Harbour have been mentioned upthread (38 chains on RTT), but it's probably worth throwing in Ardrossan Town to Ardrossan South Beach at 42 chains. Anderston to Glasgow Central is 34 chains (also timed one minute start-to-stop), while Anderston and Exhibition Centre are also shown as 41 chains apart (although I'm vaguely aware that the track layout there does odd things so I'm willing to be corrected on that one: I've never been to Glasgow).

As for the Valleys, obviously the Coryton line has got much of the attention and rightly so, but honourable mentions ought to go to Dingle Road and Penarth (35 chains), Danescourt and Fairwater (40 chains), and Fairwater and Waun-gron Park (35 chains), as well as Bargoed and Gilfach Fargoed, and Aber and Caerphilly (both 48 chains).

The Severn Beach line has been mentioned upthread - the distances on RTT are shown as 37 chains Portway Park and Ride-Shirehampton and 36 chains Redland-Montpelier. I haven't yet seen Lawrence Hill and Stapleton Road mentioned, at 46 chains, but they possibly deserve an honourable mention too.

At 45 chains I shall also throw in a mention for Godley-Newton for Hyde on the Glossop line. If we're counting closed stations, then Godley East (closed 1995) was around halfway between Godley and Hattersley (which themselves are 66 chains apart), surviving with a parliamentary service after the former's opening for a few years.

A final mention for the following from Merseyrail: Orrell Park-Walton (30 chains), Bootle New Strand-Bootle Oriel Road (33 chains), Green Lane-Birkenhead Central (34 chains), Moreton-Leasowe (38 chains), Conway Park-Hamilton Square (39 chains), Overpool-Little Sutton (41 chains), and Port Sunlight-Spital (45 chains). (This is ignoring the central loop as I think that's already been covered on this thread.)

(All mileages taken from Realtime Trains.)

Attached image is a screenshot from Realtime Trains showing the distance from Bedford to Bedford St Johns quoted as 18 chains.

Railway codes ELR milege file gives BSJ to BDM as 50 chains, as does Quail map. So it would seem to be a question of where RTT gets its mileages from (and can you trust them).

How many of these examples can you see the platform of one station while standing at the platform of the other?

We’ve definitely done this subject before!

A newish one: Portway Park & Ride to Shirehampton is slightly over 600m as the crow flies from platform end to platform end, though the line curves slightly so the rail distance will be longer.

On the same line, Montpelier to Redland is about 625m as the crow flies, and Redland to Clifton Down (straight) 800m.

I wonder what the shortest distance for three stations would be? Montpelier to Clifton would be about 1500m on the track.
There's a bridge you can stand on and see Redland and Clifton Down at the same time, and they're neither of them exactly far away. Mind you, the same is true for Fleet and Farnborough, though that one's just because of the incredibly straight alignment.

Even if the train was able to reverse in the immediate vicinity of Oulton Broad North junction, think you're looking at a minimum of 73 chains to travel between Oulton Broad North and Oulton Broad South stations. Another 2 miles 54 chains on top of that normally, for trains travelling into and then back out of Lowestoft station.

Luton to Luton Airport Parkway is 1 mile 0 chains, and you can see the station building of one from the other, but not the platforms.

Newhaven Town to Newhaven Harbour. 521m on Google maps (straight line): 31 chains on RailMiles.
Interestingly, Railway Codes gives the mileages as 56m 25ch and 56m 51ch respectively, so 26 chains. These positions agree with the sectional Appendix.

Officially, Newhaven Harbour to Newhaven Marine (former) was 16 chains (322m), which I think makes it the shortest found so far.

I've definitely misinterpreted the OP. I assumed they meant stations that are connected by rail but are in short walking distance of one-another.

Those were the days. Never used the boat train but do recall that the terminal and the station were as one many moons ago. Steely eyed Special Branch police checked everything when you boarded the ferry and a 12 car train in the morning and evening seemed to take an age to pass when you were waiting at the level crossing just past Newhaven Harbour.

I'll go for Whitehaven and Corkickle. When it was running, the PIS would get as far as "Welcome aboard the Northern service to Carlisle" before being interrupted by "We will shortly be arriving at Whitehaven" partway through the tunnel.
The same is true (still) on the between Stockport, Davenport and Woodsmoor - the "Welcome aboard" automated announcement is cut off once the train starts moving by the "The next station is" announcement.

Using RTT to calculate distances gives Woodsmoor to Davenport as 43 ch and Davenport to Stockport as 107 ch (way more than many in this thread but it's on a curve so the direct line would be closer).

Wondering what the furthest distant station you can see from the previous/next, while looking down the line. Any cases of being able to the next but one (or more)?
