I reckon Edgeley No2 to Stockport No1 - in that direction - must be the shortest absolute block section, if not actual physical distance between boxes. You’re barely past one’s section signal before you get the magnet for the home signal at the next, and I’m pretty sure that EY2’s clearing point on the Down Slow is ST1’s home signal.

Brighton Platform 3 has a junction part-way along it which allows any train of up to four coaches in length to leave towards Hove. From a practical perspective, what this means is that the platform is divided into an inner section of four-coach length and an outer one of eight-coach length. However, most of the time they are used concurrently for mainline services greater than four coaches. You can see the arrangement at http://www.opentraintimes.com/maps/signalling/vtb4.
Other short sections around the Sussex route include Oxted (especially Platform 3, but also on the Down between Oxted and Limpsfield Tunnel) and the inner home / platform line signal sections at East Croydon. There are probably dozens of fairly short distances involving shunts and turnbacks as well.
