Trivia: Return Trips most different to Outward Trip.

Hi everyone.
I'm asking for journeys where the return part of the journey takes a much longer/shorter time or a very different route/service or any other large variation. In short which return trip is most different to the original trip?

For the purposes of this thread:
1, only permitted routes are allowed.
2, the comparrison is between a train arriving at the end destination before 9am and a train leaving the same destination after 5pm, both on the same day.
3, the entire route is in the UK.
4, It's a current 2015 timetable service.
5, It's all 'heavy rail' no low floor trams/ferry/buses etc.

Like I said above any large variations in any way are allowed.

So, you're looking for journeys where there are two possible and valid routes.
Bristol Parkway - Ledbury springs to mind.
Valid via Worcester or Newport, making it a circular trip if you want, only covering the same bit of track as you arrive back at Parkway. (and the short distance between the Usk and Newport)

Dundee to London via Edinbugh/York v Preston/Glasgow. It's a ~450 mile journey with about 1/4 of a mile in common.

Missed the arriving by 9am requirement. Make it Edinburgh to London via Sleeper and ECML - 400 miles and no track in common.

Ashchurch to London Stations. A valid £56 off peak ticket is:
9.56 Ashchurch
10.24 Worcester
11.30 Birmingham New Street to London Euston.

Return Either London Paddington to Gloucester via Stroud, or via Bristol Parkway, or maybe even via Oxford.

The only bit of track the same would be at Ashchurch station as you could have gone around in a big circle.

Although you can't get there before 9am.

The destination on the ticket has to be the same, ie Gainsborough All Stations etc.

It's not just the routing I was looking for, price variation on the ticket back/type of train needed for the trip/ anything else etc.

Yesterday I went to Nottingham via Lincoln, and I needed to come back via Sheffield as the Lincoln trains stopped running earlier.
I noticed the price varied, the trains were 153/156 & 158/185 on the trip hence more comfort later, the conductor was alot less active on the return part. And other contrasts so I throught I ask if they are more varied return trips needed.

Penrith to Durham/Thornaby/Middleborough/Darlington. Fare set by Northern, however is also valid via Manchester, making the £6 weekend first upgrade exceptional value! Also allows a circular trip out via the Tyne Valley and back via Manchester or vice versa

Messages to moderators regarding a particular post/thread should be made by using the report button, but to answer your question, it appears to be not quite a quiz or game, though I agree it is similar. I've moved it to trip planning as that appears to be the best fit.
