The Transpennine Upgrades thread (https://www.railforums.co.uk/thread...upgrade-and-electrification-cp6.88054/page-46) contained the following quote:

why is it not possible to devise a system where one track is being worked on whilst trains pass by slowly on the adjacent line? People stand on railway platforms whilst trains pass by at 125mph

Rather than disrupt that thread (or get into an argument about the rights and wrongs of Health And Safety), it got me thinking about how many (open) platforms there are where trains passing by at that speed?

Most of the routes where trains can do 125mph are ones where trains are actually timed to do 125mph, but these are often stretches with no/few local stations (e.g. the ECML from Peterborough to Darlington) and many of the stations on "fast" routes don't actually have platforms on the fast lines (e.g. Thirsk in the the "Peterborough to Darlington" example). Plus there are platforms at stations not open to the public for safety reasons.

Are there many though?

I think most of the GW Thames Valley platforms on the main lines out to Didcot are passed at 125mph (Ealing Broadway, Slough etc).
Same for the WCML fast lines out to Lichfield (the Slow lines there and at Tamworh are 125mph!), including Rugby on the Up Fast.
Winsford, Hartford, Lockerbie, Penkridge...
Probably quite a few more, including some now on the MML.

I was told off for straying beyond the yellow line at Newport once, despite the line speed being 30mph!

Doesn't Tamworth get a bonus prize for 125mph on the upper and lower platforms?

But in the context of this thread the lines through the lower platforms are on the slow lines aren't they? And I didn't know that the line through the upper platforms were passed for 125mph!

The Tamworth LL slow lines are 125mph (all TV4 lines are), as they are also at Lichfield TV.

Can we count all stations between Edinburgh and Dunbar bar North Berwick?

No, Longniddry and Musselburgh aren't 125mph. I think Drem might be though, forgot about that as I think there is a short section through there?

Linespeed through Drem station is 115, it increases to/drops from 125 at Drem Jn.

Most WCML stations on fast lines from Wembley Central to Wolverton are 125mph, only Bushey (DF Only) and Watford UF - DF are not.

I imagine it's 125 through Penrith North Lakes and possibly Oxenholme Lake District?

If you look at Google maps youll see why the speed limit through Penrith is less than half that! ?50mph. A while since I've been that way.

I had thought it was 125 through to Carstairs Junction, but it did seem unlikely!

Chippenham is 125 both lines although it's only diversions and ecs that pass without stopping.

75mph in down direction and 80mph/EPS 90/95mph in the up direction at Penrith.

Do trains pass through "active platforms" at 125mph though? At Goring and Streatley, for example, aren't the only regularly used platforms the slow ones?

Many of these stations have a fence down the centre of island platforms between the fast and relief lines. Gates in these fences are opened only when trains stop for passengers on the fast lines, e.g. when relief lines are closed for maintenance etc. At Slough some HSTs stop for passengers so there are no fences. There are announcements to stand clear for all through trains, and HSTs are quite impressive when they pass through at full line speed, I for one stand well back!
