The New Forest Tour blue and green routes are scheduled to pass beneath the Ampress low bridge north of Lymington. With a maximum safe height of 4.3 metres, open toppers can pass beneath the bridge safely, however the buses’ commentary system requests that passengers remain seated while passing beneath. Any sort of warning is an absolute must since passengers not complying could prove to be fatal. Have there been any incidents involving passengers on the open top deck (but not the bus itself) coming into contact with low bridges?

Are there any other examples of low bridges with open top buses in service scheduled to run beneath them?

Good question! Dare say that over the years there's been quite a few double decker buses that have been suddenly (and dramatically) converted into an open top bus after passing under a low bridge!

The Southend seafront open topper used to go under the old Southend pier, which was similarly restricted for height; the new one over the Esplanade seems a bit higher. The conductor would go to a few steps down the stairs, announce all stay seated, check that was so, and bell the driver on, who went under at walking pace.
