Darlington and Preston are both nice places in my opinion. I love Darlington town centre and Preston has some very affluent areas.

Back on topic, Blackburn station has improved compared to what it was when I went to school there (1986-88). The town though is a dump. Sorry to anyone who lives there.

Crystal Palace (not exactly a town, but it is in Croydon) and Slough

The station is in the London Borough of Croydon, but the place itself is where, uniquely, five London boroughs meet, in the Crystal Palace Parade area.

I'm not sure I'd describe the area immediately around the station as "grotty", either - sure, there are more picturesque bits of London, but Crystal Palace is nowhere close to the top of my list of the grotty bits (and funnily enough the parade itself does actually have a few gems, not to mention the interesting history of the area). I think some people's ideas about Crystal Palace (and many of the locations on the railway corridor up to Brockley) are somewhat tainted by the approaches of the railway through the rubbish-tip back gardens and derelict sheds which can be seen from a train crawling along through the vicinity of Tulse Hill, or the sights of random disreputable chicken shops from buses crawling from Suburb A to Suburb B, or whatever. South London is, alas, often tainted by such views. It's not all like that.

Oxford parkway very modern but oh why don't they build canopies over the platforms of modern stations!!! It's going to have a lot of cold and wet people around when through services open

Or everybody boarding at the one door near the shelter, hurting dwell times.

Mansfield Woodhouse is quite a charming little station for an unmanned suburban station in a generally horrible area - the goods shed conversion is brilliant.

Stratford International - how many stations have air con ?
Also quite attractive from outside but the smashed doors on the day I went tell you all you need to know about the area

St Pancras intl is very nice

Also the new construction at Euston near the departures screen looks nice

Probably add London Bridge to that too - Tooley Street isn't the nicest
