As a companion to DarloRich's thread about stations which let their location down, how about the opposite: stations which write cheques that the location can't cash? ;)

I'll start off with:
Dewsbury
Bridgwater
Barnsley

OK I'll bite - Clapham Junction - as an interchange we are very fond of it now it has decent lifts, waiting room and food on the overbridge as you cross from the SN bit to the SWT bit. However loos not on platforms and having to pay to use them is a nerve IMO. The station is of course in Battersea, so it qualifies, I imagine?

Oi, nobody mentions Barnsley in a thread before me, it's new policy ;)

I must say Doncaster; proudest station in SY in an otherwise dirty location.

Agreed on both counts, however I'm quite fond of Sheffield especially the Sheaf Square plaza. Doncaster is okay and there's always something to look at; at least it's a better interchange than Retford.

My own nomination goes to Huntingdon, the canopy on the main building is being repainted. It's finally starting to look good again. Huntingdon itself, on the other hand...

Redcar Central!

With the rebuilding of platform 2 which still looks quite impressive, platform 1 now has the trees and signage dressed in woolens for the winter!

I'm not a fan of Barnsley station. The architecture's a bit 'Brookside Close' for my taste.

Yeah, but it's a revolution to what we had previously with that cold 30's cube we had before. It must be one of the nicer ones in South Yorkshire, in my opinion.

Sheffield's a great City !

Take a ride on the 88 and you'll take back what you say!

Everywhere's got its dodgy areas. I've had some great evenings in Sheffield (not all of them in the Tap !)

That bit of Birmingham isn't that bad actually, but Moor Street station is wasted there :D

Rhyl isn't a bad station.

I dunno, I find the North Wales Coast stations rather scruffy in general.

Also a fairly scruffy station, though with a big recent and not-too-bad bus station outside. Similarly Airport Parkway has been allowed to end up more than a little run-down despite being very new.

Here's one - Kings Cross. A very nice modern and old station in surroundings that are a bit of a dump (but improving).

To add...quite a number of Merseyrail stations - particularly recent refurbs.

Huddersfield would get my own vote.

Sheffield has changed a lot. My first experiences were as a ragged @r$€ student 15 years ago even then you entered a run down station came out to a very busy 4 lane road with fenced off subways and were surrounded by empty building on one side (sheaf house) the squalid Hallam SU building (NMB) in the other and behind you is the Beirut of the north in Norfolk Park estate.

Speaking for my own town Stockport, the station has improved no end to what it was 15 to 20 years ago, but the town centre just gets worst by the year!

I'll nominate Newquay on the basis that if you think the station's bad, just wait 'til you visit the town.

When was it they enclosed the concourse ? I vaguely remember changing trains in the early noughties and it still being a cab road ?

I'm glad there isn't a 4 lane motorway in front of it. We've got one in front of Leeds and it's annoying enough. That said, the water sculpture in front of Sheffield now makes me feel as though I need the loo !

Much of London is a dump, with just a few good areas with some interesting old / historic buildings spread around the centre, and a couple of good parks.

Edenbridge Town is faredodger central but the station isn't bad at all. Likewise Crowborough, Buxted and (to some extent) Lingfield, actually.

Hahaha. The town's fine if you stand on the cliffs with your back to it.

I'll add Camborne and Newton Abbot
