From May the new Liverpool to Newcastle service will be of use to students of the below universities:

* Liverpool
* Liverpool John Moores
* Liverpool Hope (Creative Campus)
* Manchester
* Manchester Met
* Huddersfield
* Leeds
* Leeds Met
* York
* York St John
* Teeside (Darlington campus)
* Durham
* Newcastle
* Northumbria

Giving a total of 14 universities if I've not missed any. Do any services serve more universities?

If we're excluding London services, then the Aberdeen-Leeds East Coast services serves:

* Aberdeen
* RGU
* Dundee
* Abertay
* (St Andrews, via Leuchars)
* Edinburgh
* Heriot-Watt
* Napier
* Northumbria
* Newcastle
* Durham
* Teeside (Darlington campus)
* York
* York St John
* Leeds
* Leeds Met

Which is 15 or 16, if you count St Andrews. Or even 17 if you allow the Kirkcaldy Campus of Dundee to be included in its own right.

But as an extension to the Edinburgh-Plymouth posted above, there's a daily Aberdeen-Penzance, which will take in all of the above and more.

Hope is nowhere near Lime St, it's around 4 miles away. I use Mossley Hill - 20 min walk and could use Broad Green - 20 mins but the other direction.

As a slight twist, I'd hazard a guess that the early morning Edinburgh-Newcastle-Kings Cross 'Flying Sctosman' serves the most universities per stop? If we take Kings Cross as serving those universities which are within 1 mile/20 minute walk, we have

3 stops, 7 universities, or 12 if we include the bits of the University of London separately!

* Edinburgh
* Heriot-Watt
* Napier
* Northumbria
* Newcastle
* BPP
* University of London:
** SOAS
** Birkbeck
** UCL
** University of the Arts London
** Institute of Education University of London
** The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

And for a bonus we have the headquarters of Universities UK.

I'll edit my original post to say (Creative Campus) opposed to the main campus at Childwall.

I'd definitely consider them separately. Although they all technically come under University of London, there's a distinct separation between them and they're all considered separate universities.

In MK we also have University Campus Milton Keynes which is part of the Uni of Bedfordshire, and we're the closest station to Cranfield University and The University of Buckingham.

Essex uni has the main London -Clacton & Walton line passing in its grounds but no station, Granted Hythe is about 20 min walk but only 1 tph stops there
I have often thought they could knock up a basic station within 100yds of the main building. like they did at workington in the floods it would get a lot of use as students dont have cars and parking for visitors is grim

Lancaster University is in a similar situation, and would make an excellent location for a 'Parkway' type station as well, being just off the motorway.

What's the furthest university campus from a train station then? Keele is about 5 miles from Stoke station, and the University of Cumbria campus in Ambleside is similar from Windermere station - but there must be some which are further?

If you count Myerscough College (a University College belonging to UCLAN) that's 7.8 miles from Preston station even though it's only 1.2 miles away from the WCML.

There's been talk of this before - I believe the problem is it'd block the WCML unless the station was off the main line.

It would be good to have single track heading to a university such as Durham University or Ambleside.

Also it would be pretty good to have a railway line linking Keele University and Staffordshire University and linking onto the mainline just south of Stoke-on-trent.

Are there any trains terminate at Durham which could be extended or would they have to be diverted from Newcastle? Or do you think there's a market for more trains to the University? Where from?

Is Keele Univesity to Staffordshire University a significant flow?
