(Trivia) Most mileage done in a day return

I'm defining a day as the 0400-0359, i.e a day return validity. Rail only, no disruption into the next day. Add any other land sea based journeys for a bonus.

I've done Chorley to Edinburgh Gateway (and back) on an Off Peak Day Return. That's about 402 miles in total, there and back.

Not in the UK - but on 31/07/2009 I marked the final day of my 1 year Bahncard100 with a journey as follows:
Lüneburg (dep 06.14) - Hamburg - Berlin - Frankfurt - Cologne - Berlin - Hamburg - Lüneburg (arr 22.32) - Total: 1203 miles. Greatest delay during entire journey (unthinkable on DBAG these days - 8 minutes)

Not in the UK - but on 31/07/2009 I marked the final day of my 1 year Bahncard100 with a journey as follows:
Lüneburg (dep 06.14) - Hamburg - Berlin - Frankfurt - Cologne - Berlin - Hamburg - Lüneburg (arr 22.32) - Total: 1203 miles. Greatest delay during entire journey (unthinkable on DBAG these days - 8 minutes)

Is there a good euro mile engine equivalent?

Dedication mate, the gers won on my trip too. We’d have probably wiped these trips from our memories if the result was unfavourable lol.

My highest mileage day returns (i.e. same start/end point) are:
A bit above 475 miles for a funeral (Home -> London -> Southend -> London -> Home).
A bit above 350 miles on a Northern day ranger (Manchester -> Clitheroe -> Carlisle -> Newcastle and return)
A bit above 300 miles on a Northern day ranger (Manchester -> Leeds -> Hull -> Scarborough -> Hull -> Doncaster -> Sheffield -> Manchester)
2 trips each just above and below 300 miles on West Midlands Day Rangers (one to Hereford, one Nuneaton, Coventry, Worcester and Stourbridge Town)
Dingwall - Wick, Thurso - Dingwall = 291 miles - not sure if this counts since I did go by road between Wick and Thurso (visited the Northernmost point and the true Northernmost point of the island)

Soon to be added to the list is a day return to Glasgow (and a bit of bouncing around on trains in the area), since I've just found out how cheap a day return is (compared to most other directions), that'll be well over 400 miles.

My longest in the UK and overall was 1329 km / 826 miles if metros etc. are included, from Watford Junction to Glasgow and Coatbridge. That's followed by

• Watford Junction – Balloch (1297 km / 806 miles)
• Hemel Hempstead – Watford Junction – Windermere – Carnforth – Settle – Carlisle – Watford Junction (1087 km / 676 miles)*
• Rickmansworth – King's Cross – Newcastle, including parts of the Tyne and Wear Metro (1034 km / 643 miles)
• Watford Junction – Carlisle – Newcastle – London – Radlett (1011 km / 628 miles)*

*Different start and end stations having been driven to / from at least one; doing the entire journey by train would have been possible, if less practical.

Starting elsewhere in the UK (well, all from Newcastle), my longest have been

• Newcastle – Liverpool – Chester – Shrewsbury with a TransPennine £1 sale (780 km / 485 miles)
• Newcastle – Leeds – Doncaster – Sheffield – Leeds – Newcastle (747 km / 464 miles)
• Newcastle – Carlisle – Lancaster – Ulverston – (bus, Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, and ferry) Windermere – Ormskirk – Liverpool – Wigan – Carlisle – Newcastle (684 km / 425 miles)
• Newcastle – York – Wakefield – Retford – Cleethorpes – Doncaster – Goole – Leeds – Newcastle (665 km / 413 miles)
• Newcastle – Perth and Stirling (654 km / 406 miles)

Continuing on that line of thought, my record for a day return outside the UK is 1326 km / 824 miles, from Mannheim to Lübeck via Hannover and Hamburg using a 44-Stunden-Ticket to Hamburg and back.

Other 1000+ km ones I've done are Mannheim to

• Oldenburg (1265 km / 786 miles)
• Bremerhaven (1237 km / 769 miles)
• Oostende and Bruges (1157 km / 719 miles)
• Como (1080 km / 671 miles)
• Via Kassel and Leinefelde to Halle(Saale) and returning via Leipzig (1056 km / 656 miles)
• a loop around Hannover, Hildesheim, Braunschweig, and Wolfsburg (1050 km / 653 miles)
• Innsbruck (1032 km / 641 miles)
• Geneva (1024 km / 636 miles).

I thought my day trip to Nottingham from Yeovil Junction via London in the 1970s was extreme but seems I was an also-ran.
Ironic thing was I went there for a University entrance interview - which I walked out of after five minutes because I felt the interviewer was a condescending idiot

I've done Guildford to Glasgow and back a handful of times back when we had £6 Avanti day rover tickets - a Seatfrog first class upgrade on top of that and it made for a very enjoyable (and affordable) day out.

I have done day trips from Cambridge to Brugge and back on Eurostar, no idea how far that is but it was a long day!

Within the UK I recall going Cambridge-London and back for a railtour London-Glasgow and back a total distance of more than 900 miles.

Strood to Hull and back for an interview (1980ish) - seemed far longer than it actually was, with a Cravens DMU between Hull and Doncaster!
Strood to Manchester and back for an interview same year - return was on a relief Manchester-Euston formed of Mk1s and a class 81-85 (don't remember which).

For Germany, the DB site used to have a charging calculator for third party operators which gave distances. I nowadays tend to use a combination of the Schweers and.Wall atlases , Wikipedia and geodistance.

1.Tonbridge-Charing Cross-tube to Euston then WCML to Glasgow Central walk to Queen Street then train to Edinburgh Waverley ECML to Kings Cross tube to Charing Cross back to Tonbridge

2. Tonbridge- Waterloo East, Waterloo Eurostar Terminal - Paris Gare du Nord and return.
