I think the OP is after the most minimum required changes. He also disregards routes involving ferry links.

But even if not, Mallaig - Shanklin, for example, can be done by changing at Glasgow (walk), London (which counts as one change) or Bristol, Portsmouth and Ryde, so four.

I think you are using the rules from the more than 2 changes away from Birmingham thread.

The rules here were:
Like you said, the most changes absolutely needed to get between any UK rail stations. I didn't allow ferries or buses just railed vehicles. But I allow other rail networks that connect with the national network like trams, metros and heritage. Walking isn't allowed unless the stations are very very close. No walking is ever allowed if a rail alternative exists unless the stations are right next to each other.
And London stations are treated like seperate ones.

I also asked which stations are furthest from certain metropolitan areas. See the first post for details.

For example Mallaig passengers change at:
Glasgow Queen st then Edinburgh then Doncaster then Grimsby Town to get to my station New Clee. 4 changes is the minimum needed. Which journey needs a higher number? Which has the hishest number?
That's what I'm asking.

I assume from the example you just gave that is the case as otherwise you would be able to do it with 3 changes: Glasgow QS / Central, Manchester Piccadilly, Grimsby Town.

Four will take some beating, and your other question I will need to think about it. Off the top of my head, two is the most I have for Birmingham, which I assume is within your definition of "big city"?

Is there any station without a direct service to one of the central Belfast stations (I take it to mean anywhere between Great Victoria St and Central) in Northern Ireland? Do you count the Irish Republic?

I don't think the Queen St to Central is a valid walk as you can change once to get there anyway. Also the Subway looks close enough to be used. Likewise you've have to use Metrolink between Victoria and Picadilly and London Underground between Marylebone and Waterloo.

''Big City'' is something I found hard to define. So I settled on Metropolitan Counties (W. Mids, G. Manchester, Merseyside, W. Yorks, S. Yorks and Tyne & Wear). I added Glasgow as it had a PTE area like the other places. I added London, Edinburgh, Belfast and Cardiff to be fair for devolved government areas.

I won't allow Channel Tunnel services. But after noting what you said Ireland needs to be included for Belfast services. It was built as one network afterall.

If you wanted a day out in Lowestoft, you could board the 17:13 service from Kyle of Lochalsh and make 7 changes arriving into Lowestoft at 11:35 and enjoy just over 7 and a half hours in Lowestoft before boarding the 19:07 service from Lowestoft and make 6 changes and arrive back at Kyle of Lochalsh less than 48 hours after departure at 16:12, But it could be done in 4 or 5 I think.

If you go from Kyle of Localsh to Exeter Airport on the 1208, the fastest way of doing it needs 9 changes. But again, it can be done in 4 off the 0615 (though it's 4 hours slower).

Glasgow Central to Glasgow Queen Street just go to the low level platforms at Glasgow Central & change at Partick for Glasgow Queen Street brings you into the low level platforms at Queen Street.
