Trivia: Favourite Underground line

It's all so much better than MTA's Subway in New York though. Jeepers that network is so unloved and the whole lot looks like it's been trapped in the 20th Century. It needs a thorough clean up and made more friendly on the eyes, especially at platform level. Then of course those trains are just not nice...

Trust me, I'm not rushing back to travel on that lot. Even the Bakerloo line feels modern in comparison...

The NY stations are so cramped at platform level too, with narrow staircases down to narrow island platforms

It is kinda fun through seeing all those separate lines running parallel with each other underground, like the Circle Line would be if it was a proper separate line!

Bakerloo.

The trains, the stations, and especially some of the escalators like at Marylebone (and St Johns Wood although that's now on the Jubilee), love them. Such a different experience descending and ascending. Smooth, quiet, and that vibe of quality that you sadly only get with classic engineering.

I've racked up some serious mileage on the Bakerloo going back to when the 38 and 59 stocks were running. The "new" trains were withdrawn to the Jubilee at one point and we made do with the ancient stocks and yet I was never late for work. I regret the loss of the armrests and the dangly appendages to hold onto.

The up escalator at Marylebone was out of action on Friday, what a climb! Considering it dates back to the nineteen forties it's not doing so bad.

So yes, I vote for the old brown one, the trains will be seriously old when they are finally replaced.

What about the s8 sets on the Met ?

Not all trains on the met are S8s, and that will proberbly be the case for the foreseeable future.

Where is the centrepoint of central London? The three places that have the most credence are Charing Cross/Trafalgar Square, Piccadilly Circus and Oxford Circus, all served by the Bakerloo line. Then there's 'Waterloo Sunset' and an old Londoner like me can get quite sentimental! One of the two Undergound lines I never worked on, though, which TBH probably helps my attachment.

True , but the number of S7+1s are so few , in comparison to the S8s , I think there are 2 S7+1s , which means over 90 percent of the fleet ,are S8s with some transverse seating . The likelihood of getting the S7 +1s is pretty low too

Having said that , I have the S7+1 unit on a Watford semi fast , but it was once or twice last year

I went with Bakerloo. Fond recent memories of visiting a mate who lived by West Ealing for some years, getting the train in to Paddington and then jumping on the Bakerloo and its old rolling stock. I also used to enjoy getting the District Line in from Ealing Broadway, the Jubilee line is pretty cool to.

Back in my younger days it always seemed to be the Circle, Northern and Victoria lines I was on. All good fun but I prefer the three I mentioned first.

Was chatting to a mate about it a short while back who isn't really a rail buff but we both just love the underground. Whenever we visit somewhere abroad together we always make sure we use the local metro system if there is one.

The Central Line is horrible.

The Victoria Line I can't take seriously since they filled their signalling room with concrete.

The Waterloo & City Line just isn't useful enough for me, though I appreciate its brevity.

The Circle Line is not even a circle.

The District Line signals keep messing up our Piccadilly servoce.

The Hammersmith & City is just annoying.

The Metropolitan Line refuses to admit it's a mainline service.

The Northern Line signalling system is even stupider, and wasn't tuned to the higher performance of the 1995TS, resulting in a DLResque false starting at stations like Moorgate with irritating hysteresis.

The Piccadilly Line has rolling stock with such a ridiculous number of problems...
