Trivia: Favourite Underground line

I was thinking about this over the weekend, mine is the District line because it is mostly above ground and it has quite a lot of variety (used to have the best stock too!)

Bakerloo, its what i take first when i arrive in London and is also LU's heritage line

I would previously have voted for the Metropolitan Railway, but nowadays it has to be the heritage Bakerloo.

It's also quite an interesting line north of Queens Park, paralleling the busy WCML.

The Central line got the vote as it took over part of the Great Eastern. Some interesting stations out that way.

The whole system is fascinating though, each line has its merits.

Ooh, this is a good subject. I don't really consider the LU much, so I had to think about it.

For me, it has to be the Victoria, as it takes me straight from Northern land into the heart of the Southern Region. And the light blue tiles are pleasingly pastel.

For me, it used to be the Circle Line, simply because it made for a great pub crawl. With the passing of years, and lowering tolerance, it's now the Waterloo & City.

I'd go with the met, it's usually the first line I get despite arriving at Marylebone

A lot of it is above ground and I've not rode any S-stock on any other line

I hate the central line, horrible trains which are always too hot, very eerie and dark, little head room for a tall person, normally always overcrowded even outside peak, I know some of it is due to the profile of the tunnels, but for me the central line is far worse than the other lines of the same profile for these reasons.

Bakerloo also can be unbearably hot in the summer.

I love the Jubilee , travels pretty fast and I love the sound that the trains make as well as the cavernous , futurisitic JLE stations

Also a fan of the Met , for the transverse seating and aircon

The Victoria Line flies into stations so I love that as well

Having said that , I put the Jubilee

I like the Bakerloo line, as it goes at Elephant and Castle, and I'm usually at that area.

Jubilee and Vicky line also gets my vote.

Piccadilly, Because I think it has the best architecture - or to put it another way, a higher than average number of genuinely interesting stations.

It was the District Line until the D78s went.

Now it's the Jubilee Line - fast, beautiful stations and good trains with nice motors.

As for my least favourite, the Central is horrible. Trains are in an awful condition and it is hot, noisy and overcrowded. The same can be applied to the the Piccadilly and Northern Lines.

For me its the Victoria line as its the closest line to a "rapid transit" system. It does exactly as it says on the tin - fast modern frequent trains linking key stations/attractions etc. Even the old 67 stock felt modern right up to the end.

Has to be the Met for me - I enjoy rushing through stations without calling. And the new stock tips it over the Pic.

The Jubilee is my absolute favourite - Such a fast line especially on the JLE and north of Neasdon which produces a wonderful sound from the traction motors. Closely followed is the Bakerloo - a heritage line in rolling stock and in station style. So nice to see those old trains still running, and to see others pass on the WCML. My least favourite is definitely the Circle line as it's slow, boring and inconsistent with service. Whilst the S stock are nice, they lack the character of the C stock.

So does the Northern...

The Northern Line is sooooo boring. Like, the 1995 stock sounds dead, and it's so slow to the Jubilee line.

The Bakerloo Line has more character meanwhile, so that's my pick.

Victoria Line hands down. Fast and shifts people by the bucketload.

Bakerloo a close second. The last "retro" tube line left.

Closed after 9/11 due to "security reasons". The Queens Building upon which it sat has long been demolished to make way for new Terminal 2.

Very difficult but I'd say

Joint 1st Bakerloo for nostalgia & the Jubilee for uniqueness being so so useful
3rd Metropolitan for heritage and express trains
4th Victoria. Just being incredible
5th Northern. Use it most after the Jubilee, you just start to love it
6th Piccadilly. It goes Arsenal and has the poshest voice on the tube

Loved the Central as a kid, hate it now. Always too bloody hot.

The District was our line when we lived in London. I like the contrast between the ex-LSWR suburban sections and the Circle. Also the way it links the richest and poorest suburbs together.

But I agree the Piccadilly has got the edge in terms of architecture. The partnership of Holden and Pick was amazing.

For the sheer speed and connectivity, the Victoria line gets my vote.

In terms of fun, it used to be the Bakerloo, but that's been replaced by the sheer racket the Jubilee sets make. As I typed that I got the sound in my head and now I really want to go to London again!

Got to be the Northern.

1) Oldest Tube railway in the world.
2) Loads of unique features compared to many of the other lines, for example the tunnels enlarged in the 1920s, remains of the incline tunnel leading to the depot, superb features like the King William Street tunnels, the Northern Heights unbuilt lines, etc.
3) Generally the Northern Line services better-than-average parts of London, no silly events like Wembley Stadium, Winter Wonderland or the O2, and is generally comparatively quiet off-peak compared to other lines.

For second-favourite probably the Victoria Line, simply for some of the engineering features required when the line was built, which are quite spectacular when seen 'in the flesh'.

I use the Met the most of the time and it's my nearest underground line. but the Bakerloo came second, it's nice and warm in the winter

I loath the central line. It's the dark windows that do it for me.

I know it wasn't on the list but Moorgate to Drayton Park has a certain retro charm.

The Central Line is indeed horrendous for all the reasons given, but the contrast between Oxford Circus crowds and rural Essex is worth experiencing. It would have been even more so when the Epping - Ongar section was still in use.

Bakerloo. Only line left with guaranteed bench transverse seating. Also has a unique musky smell which is very nostalgic.

There's an unacceptably high number of votes for the Vic, a line completely devoid of any character.
