Trivia: every passenger train coupled up?

Over a few drinks, and accidentally getting on to the very front of a train and having to walk along the platform to get to the exit, I had a vision...

So, if we linked all of the trains, nose to tail, let's say passenger trains and only ones that are in service, together. How long would the train be? Any guesses?

Before all the pedants come along and start whinging about why this would never happen (couplings, track clearances &c.) I'm guessing this is entirely hypothetical. One question though, are you including coaches such as those on an HST, and would this include the power cars or are you going for exclusively passenger accommodation?

They just need to be touching, coupling doesn't matter, I'm not going to drive it it can include every part of a trainset, power cars, DVT's and all.

SWTs electric fleet gives us-

45 444s gives us 45x5x23.57=5.303km
127 450s gives us 127x4x20.34= 10.332km
91 455s give us 91x4x19.83=7.218km

So the SWT electric units are 22.853km long.

Going on the same methodology as 455driver for SE's fleet...

10 375/3s - 10x3x20.4 = 0.612km
102 375/6/7/8/9s - 102x4x20.4 = 8.323km
36 376s - 36x5x20.15 = 3.627km
29 395s - 29x6x20.22 = 3.518km
147 465s - 147x4x20.06 = 11.795km
43 466s - 43x2x20.06 = 1.725km

Total SE units = 29.6km

22 159/0 (3 coach
8 159/1 (3 coach)
Gives us-

(11x2)+(22x3)+(8x3)= 112 coaches at 22.57m= 2.527km

Pacers give us-

142- 94x2x15.55= 2.923km (nearly 3 km of 142s! )
143- 23x2x15.45= 0.710km
144- (13x2)+(10x3)x15.45=0.862km

So a grand total of 4.495km of Pacer!

We've done this before, if I remember correctly it came to somewhere in the region of 160 miles. Obviously there has been some new stock since then, such as the 350/4s and 377/6s.

Mk3 = 121 x 23 = 2783m

So thats a grand total of 24.8km of Greater Anglia!

Gauging issues aside, let's have all London Underground and other rapid transit systems then.

I'd ask about freight, but I'm scared. I work in Tyseley and some trains seem to take so long to pass through they must be measured in quarters of miles.

I saw some tube stock being moved through Birmingham a few weeks back. I honestly thought I'd fallen asleep and woken up on the outskirts of London. Then I saw that abandoned car carrier on the tracks and realised it was just Small Heath. Imagine all stock, linked together whizzing past at stupid o'clock. I'm in Liverpool, no! I'm in Paignton. Birmingham! Aah, sod it.

1972 stock - 36 x 112 = 4032m
1973 stock - 86 x 105 = 9030m
1992 stock - 85 x 130 = 11050m
1992 stock (W&C) - 5 x 65 = 325m
1995 stock - 106 x 106 = 11236m
1996 stock - 63 x 124 = 7812m
2009 stock - 47 x 133 = 6251m
S8 stock - 58 x 127 = 7366m
D stock - 75 x 109 = 8175m
C stock - 46 x 93 = 4278m

Eventual S7 total - 133 x 112 = 14896m

Total around 70km depending on exactly how many S7 / C Stocks are currently in service.

There are only 8 C Stock rakes ( 24 units ) remaining now, so that "length" has just shrunk a bit... As for S7s, unit 21411/2 is, I believe, today's new delivery.
