I was doing some browsing due to procrastination and found a VERY early morning train: the 1B39 03:03 Carmarthern to Swansea. I'm assuming that there are no other Arriva Trains Wales services that run this early. I mean, there could be so don't take it for granted.

That got me wondering: what is the earliest that other TOCs run trains?

Also, what would the passenger flow be like on that service?

Can of worms there.

Some run throughout the night (e.g. Gatwick Express, except this winter due to engineering work).

The sleeper portions which split off in Scotland are also service trains, so they are pretty early.

Most I would imagine start around the 05:00 mark.

It depends what you class as early.

I’m sure from stations like Waterloo or Victoria there will be departures at 000x, which is technically the very start of the day.

From a ticket point of view, I believe your ticket is valid up until 0500 the day after the date on the ticket. So the ‘earliest’ train would be the 050x from a station.

First Brighton Main Line service is 0405 from Blackfriars, or 0415 from Brighton with Thameslink Mon - Fri, but weekends Southern kicks off at 0350 from Brighton and 0400 London Vic.

Now, here's a question, does a new railway day start at 0000 or 0431?

And another related question... which is the sleepiest TOC to get going? :D Which operator's first train is the latest of them all?

EDIT... on weekdays, Hull Trains first service leaves Beverley at 06:00 (05:59 on a Saturday)... is that the latest first train?

EDIT 2... nope... Grand Central's first train appears to be 06:45 on a weekday from Sunderland.

It's 0429 I believe.

Those early morning services in West Wales are often contenders. There's quite a range of silly o'clock stuff in that part of the world, from time to time with no obvious ferry or London connections either.

Gatwick Express hasn't run anything close to an overnight service for some time, and the extended "engineering works" (largely non-existent) related reductions have been in place since early summer.

I believe there are Transpennine airport runs much more extreme than anything in the current GX timetable.

You've got a very good point about the Sleepers though, I'll give you that!

0429hrs. 0500 is after the start of service on many routes, and there could, I suppose, be some where day tickets valid until 0500 might undercut open ones.

Southern runs at least hourly between Victoria and Three Bridges on Fri->Sat and Sat->Sun nights. No first or last trains on that bit.

Any earlier ScotRail services than the 0453 Inverness-Edinburgh via Aberdeen?

Scotrails earliest offering appears to be the 0453 Inverness - Aberdeen.
Itself pipped just slightly by CS's 0450 Edinburgh - Fort William which also conveys sleeper coaches off the Inverness sleeper ;)

Next few starts are:
0458 Dumfries - Carlisle
0508 Perth - Inverness
0513 Ayr - Glasgow C
Dunblane - Edinburgh
Perth - Edinburgh

I was surprised that there are not. Pretty sure back in BR days there were 03xx and 04xx services on Glasgow suburban routes. most seem to start after 0530 now :o

Greater Anglia would appear to start up with the 0400 Southend Victoria to London Liverpool Street?

0028 Manchester Piccadilly to Chester and 0336 Chester to Manchester Airport via Manchester Piccadilly are rather early!

For GN it is 0325 Peterborough to KX. Gradually fills up on route to about 25% seats taken by Finsbury Park, slightly less to KX. Mostly railway staff of various types.

The one mentioned was the boat train till this year and connects to London!

As for weekday Southern branded services, the 0450 Tonbridge-Redhill presently takes some beating. For all those passengers who want to go from Penshurst to Purley Oaks before 6am, with just one change at Redhill...
