Trivia: Cricket Grounds Visible From Trains.

Following on from the football grounds near rail lines thread, howabout a thread about cricket pitches visible from trains..?

Here is a photo of Matlock Cricket Club’s third team ground at Cromford.
A Nottingham bound EMR Class 170 unit is in the background.

Hamilton Crescent ground at Partick

Famously there’s about 6 or 7 on the Barley Mow as well

Bedminster Cricket Club backs onto the Portishead/Portbury line between the former Ashton Gate and Clifton Bridge stations, although vegetation mostly obscures the line now.

When the Ashton Meadows depot was still open for departmental trains they would occasionally use a siding adjacent to the line here to store rolling stock. I can remember the Chipmans Weedkiller Train sitting there for a few months back in the mid 80s and on another occasion PWM654 lived there for a bit, at that time clearly visible from the ground and the road on the other side of it.

Lots of trees in the way, but Bath cricket club ground is visible from the train.

Then there's Southport and Birkdale cricket club in Birkdale, which is right beside the railway.

The pitch is largely obscured, but the County Ground in Taunton site is easily visible from trains arriving from the east, especially the floodlights and tall stands.

The stands and floodlights of the County Ground in Bristol are visible from trains on the viaduct over Gloucester Road between Montpelier and Redland, although the ground being quite a distance away means the playing field itself isn't visible in the slightest!

My instinctive reply would be Warwick Road, where the LCC ground (but not the pitch) is visible from the former MSJ&A line, and served by the eponymous station.

I am aware that this is now merely a Metrolink line.

I grew up playing Surrey Championship cricket (Saturday league). There are many club grounds in S London and Surrey next to railways.

Kenley, Guildford, Worcester Pk, Dulwich (can be seen by two lines), New Beckenham/HSBC come to mind. Cheam also I would mention, but it has one of the world's largest permanent sightscreens between the ground and the railway...

A couple in the Calder Valley....

Bridgeholme CC's ground is the width of the A646 from the railway between Todmorden and Hebden Bridge. Plenty of cricket balls lost on the railway embankment over the years

Copley CC is in the 'v' of the junction just east of Milner Royd and easily visible from both lines

Also I'd be surprised if you couldn't see part of Todmorden CC's ground from the viaduct coming out of Tod station.

I played a match at South Wingfield CC in Derbyshire about 30 years ago and one of our more enthusiastic fielders made a diving stop on the boundary edge. He tried to return the ball quickly to the wicket keeper and the ball slipped out of his hand and ended up on the Midland Mainline.
Not sure whether the ball ended up in St Pancras though!!!

Almost forgot about Handsworth CC, situated in the middle of Perry Barr junction! The only access is via a foot crossing across the tracks.

I have watched Lancashire play a few times at Southport over the years and the Merseyrail trains seem to usually pass each other next to the square leg/cover boundary.

I can remember a certain Viv Richards without a helmet playing for Somerset pulling a bouncer over square leg onto the rail line.

I am showing my age now though!

Millhouses Works Cricket Club in Sheffield is next to the Midland Mainline running into Sheffield, just alongside the former site of the Ecclesall and Millhouses Station.

A few off the top of my head.

Millom. A lovely well appointed ground with excellent clubhouse.
Though trees were growing last time I was up that way. Used to be great seeing 31s/37s/47s/56s etc coming past while watching cricket in the days when the coast had decent freight and you could get a decent view of the scoreboard from the train. Some big names have played for Millom over the years as well.

Warton. Blink and you’ll miss it next to the WCML north of Carnforth. Lovely little field.

Cardinal Newman college in Preston has two separate cricket fields visible from the WCML embankment south of the Ribble. Two games were being played when I passed a week or so ago. Preston CC is on the other side of the line and other side of the river nearby as is BAE sports club cricket field.

Adlington (Lancs) just south of the station on the west side. Looks a nice set up.

Wigan. Just north of North Western station.

Duddon sports and social club ground is north of Askam station.

The trainline goes pretty close to New Road in Worcester, I think you can see the ground but it's a while since I travelled that way.

Salts CC in Saltaire and Bradford and Bingley CC from Airedale Line

No longer valid as the line is long gone, but Collingham and and Linton CC boundary is on what was once the Leeds to Wetherby line.

Wokingham CC from Reading to Waterloo line

Kings School Grantham cricket square viewable on the right as you depart Grantham. Appreciate it is not technically a cricket club but from memory the East Coast Mainline runs across a viaduct next to it so good views both ways
