As a more minor example (stopping patterns rather than new routes), how close did LNER come to introducing a King's Cross – Newcastle – Edinburgh in four hours service, given that the southbound Flying Scotsman was introduced in summer 2019?

Would the Addiscombe Line count? It survived 7 months and 18 days of Connex South Eastern before being shut. Then again I think NSE wanted to close the line prior to privatisation.

I don't think so. The fastest northbound service in the draft December timetable seems to be the 05:45 Lumo (4:04) with York-Newcastle fast services taking at least 4:08. The existing 05:40 Edinburgh to 09:40 King's Cross will be an 05:37 to 09:50 service calling at Newcastle and York.
