What other buses serve out if town prisons (ie not in town or city centre)
Seems to be used as a park and ride judging by the number of cars parked near the terminus. I used it a couple of times to get to Morden station when there were strikes on NR.Route 80 in London serves High Down and Downview prisons in Belmont. Its the terminus for the route and must be one of the most frequent prison buses with a bus every 8 minutes during the daytime with the first bus at 04.50 and the last bus at 01.00 with a significant Sunday service although the first bus is 06.35 and a frequency is every 15 minutes...
This must be one of the longest established. Over the decades this route has been numbered 5, then 155 and more recently 55, serving Everthorpe borstal, which became HMP Everthorpe, sprouted HMP Wolds next door and finally saw the two merged to become HMP Humber!East Yorkshire’s 55 serves HMP Humber.
Not as long established as anything that serves Princetown which essentially is Dartmoor Prison! Passed by that on the 98 earlier this year. This must be one of the longest established. Dartmoor Prison is currently closed due to radon gas and all prisoners and staff "evacuated"Not as long established as anything that serves Princetown which essentially is Dartmoor Prison! Passed by that on the 98 earlier this year.
Dartmoor Prison will remain shut indefinitely after ongoing safety concerns, including the discovery of radioactive gas, prompted the authorities to move prisoners out.
Back in the 80s and 90s, a handful of journeys on the X18 used to go past the loop at Acklington and into the actual prison at visiting times. That must be unique for any bus service, at least ones not run with HMP paddy wagons! The visiting wives and girlfriends that used the service were somewhat down to earth, to say the least.Notably, the Arriva X18 in Northumberland serves what was Acklington prison (now HMP Northumberland) every hour in both directions, with a turning circle to serve the place. Meanwhile, Southern Vectis serve Parkhurst and Albany between Cowes and Newport.
However, type "prison" into bus times and you get
- Diamond Bus 552 (Long Lartin)
- First 385a (Moorlands)
- Goodfellow 385 (Lindholme)
- Stagecoach m1 (Haverigg)
- Stagecoach 29 (Bullingdon)
