Trivia: Appalling stations next to better stations

Manchester Piccadilly and Oxford Road.

I had to get a train at Oxford Road once in the evening peak and it was just bedlam.

Snowdown and Shepherdswell (the former has rather unattractive concrete waiting shelters, although at least it doesn't look as run-down as in BR days when it only had very dim tungsten lighting - indeed I seem to recall that a few years ago Southeastern or the DfT considered reducing the number of trains calling there to just a token service). The latter still has a very attractive station building, and the East Kent Railway adjacent to it.

Peartree has a lot going for it... Best security of any station ive been to so far... So good, i needed to phone control to be let out!! Also has KFC across the road. As for Manors... It exists for Toon fans that alight there on match days judging by last Saturday. Otherwise, it is right up there with the worst of them.

Agreed... I don't think Oxford Road's that bad at all! They keep it reasonably tidy and it's fairly easy to navigate as well (and the staff are friendly to boot!)- only thing I'd really do is tart up the rooftop next to P5 and give it all a fresh lick of paint!

Man Vic and Moston.. whilst Man Vic may not be the best it atleast has some facilities.. Moston still only grts 1 tph in each direction and still has half the down platform missing..

To be a bit silly, I could say Preston and Salwick, or Preston and Lostock Hall

Instead I'll nominate Blackburn (good) and Accrington (not so).

There's nothing wrong with Lostock Hall when the lights are working.
Unless you meant that Preston was the appalling one

Southern stations tend to be very well presented would people agree?

Clear modern signs and recently painted

The stations between Sutton and Wimbledon look neglected in comparison with the old Thames link mark1 signage and fcc paintwork that could do with a touch up

Southern's station signage is actually usually quite reasonable, especially at smaller stations (there are, of course, exceptions - as with any network), though this only really applies to the permanent stuff - it always gets bad when local staff stick mismatching bits of paper around the place, for example. Many station teams and Southern's in-house maintenance do actually work pretty hard with keeping up cleanliness and so on. Coastal and rural routes tend to do reasonably well. But I wouldn't say all Southern's stations are particularly presentable. There are a few very grim examples in the inner Metro area. Selhurst, Streatham, Tulse Hill, North Dulwich, South Bermondsey and bits of Balham have all seen better days.

Derby and Burton-on-Trent, Derby is not a brilliant station but Burton-on-Trent is really bad.

Grantham is much nicer than Peterborough.

You think so? I thought BUT was reasonable on my visits there, and PBO isn't a terrible station these days.
