Wife and I plan to spend 2 weeks vacation in Northern Portugal end of September.
As bonus, I consider doing the trip from Belgium to Porto by train.
My experience with Spanish and Portuguese trains being minimal, I would appreciate any help I could get.
Conditions of travel are the following:
1) no night trains. You don'tget to see anything.
2) Hotel stopovers en route are fine, even if 3 or 4 are needed.
3) no high speed trains, unless absolutely necessary.
4) interrail if possible
I have started looking at Bahn.de but it seems they don't have Spanish schedules for end September yet.
I have seen a very tempting proposal to join Bordeaux from Brussels by using 3 trains :
- ouigo train classique from Brussels Midi to Paris Nord
- ouigo train classique from Paris Nord to Nantes
- SNCF IC train from Nantes to Bordeaux.
Interesting but no interrail validity on the two first trains.
I also saw that on certain days, RENFE runs a train from Barcelona to A Coruna. Looks quite tempting, but is this train still running end of September ? Interrail validity ? Can I catch it somewhere from Irun or do I need to take it from Barcelona ? if yes, can I do Bordeaux to Barcelona in one day ? Via Toulouse and Puigcerda ?
Bahn.de shows no train between Hendaye and Irun. Do I have to use Euskotren ? Is interrail accepted?
Last leg of the trip would be from, I suppose, Vigo to Porto. I heard it's possible but I know no specifics.
And finally, can any one provide info on available train trips on the Douro Valley ? Considering going a boat cruise with return by train. Feasible ?
Many thanks in advance for any help or advice,
Marc.
