After a 10-year hiatus, there are through trains again between Italy (Udine and Trieste) and Ljubljana in Slovenia.
The service is a 2tpd locally-sponsored service using Italian regional EMUs.

The revival of the service is the result of a partnership between the Italian region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, which owns the CAF-built ETR563 electric multiple-units deployed on the route, and national operators Trenitalia and SŽ whch provide crew in their respective countries

Cross-border services were stopped in 2008, but Slovenian local services were subsequently extended 5km westwards from Sežana to Villa Opicina in Italy.
This allowed determined rail travellers to reach Trieste by using the spectacular 5km tram route 2 down the cliff from Villa Opicina town centre to Piazza Oberdan in Trieste, 5 minutes from Centrale.
However the tram line has been out of service following an accident in 2016, but there is a replacement bus service.

The new service runs via the circuitous original Südbahn route to Villa Opicina (28.5km by rail from Trieste), and on to Ljubljana.
Times from Trieste taking 2h40 are 0901 and 1909*, from Ljubljana at 0557* and 1610.
(* extends to/from Udine via Cervignano)
The local SŽ trains to Villa Opicina still seem to operate, and there is a railway-sponsored 2tpd bus (an hour faster than the train).

From 9 September, you can take a direct train to Trieste again. Travel to Trieste, Palmanova, Trieste Airport (Ronchi), and Udine, or continue your travel further afield Italy.
This is nothing like the one-time long-distance services such as the Simplon-Orient Express, but it's a start.
Coupled with improved rail services between Vienna and Venice, cross-border rail in the area is fighting back after years of retrenchment.
