Any advice? This is the best I've come up with so far.

I have a 16-25 Railcard and am planning on using the 10% NUS discount too

Travelling

Waterbeach-> Exeter £23 offpeak single advance 22/12/11 (must be in the afternoon)

Exeter -> Bracknell £19 offpeak single advance 27/12/11

Bracknell -> London £7 offpeak single advance 29/12/11

London ->Waterbeach £13.50 offpeak single advance 29/12/11

Have I missed anything?

First off - there's no such thing as an "off peak advance" - Off Peak tickets can be bought on the day or any time before travel, and will always be the same price. Advance tickets must be bought at least the day before, and restrict you to one train only.

A straight Waterbeach-Exeter Off Peak Return with Railcard is £51.50 - cheaper than your combination and I'm pretty sure it would be valid for your itinerary (not got time to check now but I'm sure others can confirm). You can break your journey on the return ticket from Exeter-Waterbeach, and I can't see why Exeter-Reading-Bracknell (break) -London-Waterbeach wouldn't be valid. This gives you much more flexibility and no need to worry about missed trains.

Be aware of the engineering work at Reading over the holiday - the lines between Reading and Wokingham are closed so it'll be a bus. Also, the 10% NUS discount only applies to CrossCountry services IIRC so it's unlikely to help you here.

Welcome to the forum.

With Bracknell to London, London to Waterbeach bit you would need to get from London Waterloo to Kings Cross. An Off Peak Day Single Bracknell to Waterbeach is £23.65 and would include cross london transfer between Waterloo and Kings X. This would be cheaper if you would don't have an Oyster and offers more flexibility than Advance tickets. Indeed you can travel by any train from Bracknell due into Waterloo at or after 1000.

is perfectly suitable for your itinerary. You may break your journey en-route at Bracknell and continue any time within the ticket's validity. The return portion is valid for one month.

There is no time restriction on the Waterbeach - London leg of your journey as Waterbeach is within the former Network SouthEast area whereas Exeter is not.

I had no idea it was possible to break a return journey like that. Is it widely known amongst rail staff, or am I likely to get grief? Is it worth having a copy of the T&C at hand to remind them that I'm travelling legally?

I'm aware of the rail works around the area - I think the route suggested by the trainline was a bus to Wokingham or something. But I have to travel that day.

No need, if questioned just say that your breaking \ you've broken your journey. You should have no trouble at all, it is basic minimum knowledge (I hope!)

I would hope so too, but it's not unknown to encounter staff who seem to be unaware of such things.

Barry Doe wrote (a couple of years ago now) about an NXEC guard who encountered a passenger doing this, and the guard only backed down once the customer calledup NRCOC webpage on his iPhone. So yes, take a copy of NRCOC with you and (esp if it is gripped on 27th on FCC) be prepared for questions from staff who don't have a clue.

Please don't use thetrainline.com as they charge unnecessary fees!

You can book your tickets online via any Train Operator's website or www.nationalrail.com or even go to your local station.

Yes, don't use the trainline, use a TOC website, www.redspottedhanky.com etc etc or you can just buy this ticket from a ticket office and probably a ticket machine on the day as it's not an Advance ticket
