Trenitalia Regional Digital Ticket Automatic Delay Compensation

On Sunday I was travelling on the 11:22 regional express from Verona to Venice. It was diverted due to engineering works and some sort of infrastructure failure on the diversionary route caused it to be cancelled from Cerea. At this point I was advised to return to Verona (on the same train) and then catch a bus on to Venice. In the end when I arrived back at Verona I caught the 13:26 train to Venice (exactly the same as my original but 2 trains later) which arrived just under 90 mins late.

All in all I was definitely delayed by over 2 hours compared to my original schedule arrival time (according to the amended engineering works timetable) and my ticket cost over €8 so I believe I am due 50% compensation.

Trenitalia claims to automatically provide compensation for Digital regional tickets (which mine was) but I suspect the fact my original train was completely cancelled before reaching Venice means I will have to claim manually since it won't know what alternative route I took. Does anyone have any experience of trenitalia's automatic compensation system?

As an update: I ended up making a manual claim and received my 50% compensation on 21st May.

The automatic compensation system remains a mystery!
