Tree smashes on to double-decker bus in Poole

Passengers and a bus driver had a lucky escape when a tree fell on to a double-decker bus in strong winds in Poole.

Dorset Police said the tree crashed through the front of the upper deck of the vehicle while it travelled along Ringwood Road shortly before 12:00 GMT.

Morebus said five passengers and the driver were on board at the time but no-one was injured.

Ringwood Road was closed to traffic while the bus was recovered and the tree removed.


A hairdresser working at a nearby salon said she heard a "massive bang".

"We looked outside and it looked like the tree just collapsed on to the bus so I just called 999," Katie Seal said.

"It's a busy road so there was lots of people about."

Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said two crews attended but were not required as no-one was trapped.

Storm Erik brought strong winds to parts of the country on Friday and more rain and unsettled weather is expected through the weekend.

Thankfully everyone escaped injury which was pretty lucky given the extensive damage caused to the bus!

Indeed, very fortunate. A car driver in neighbouring Devon wasn't so lucky this morning, and died of his injuries.

About 10 years ago the company I drive for had a tree fall on a bus, fortunately with no injuries. It was lucky the bus was there in a way as a car also got hit by it and if the bus hadn't been there the car would have been squashed.

Very lucky that nobody was injured or killed in this. I think they were lucky that nobody was sitting in the front where the tree struck the bus. From looking at the photos it seems the tree caused a lot of damage to the front of the vehicle. I wonder if it will be repaired or scrapped.

Might be a candidate for open top conversion... glad to hear no-one was hurt in this.

Perhaps, but the damage looks to extend further down the bodyshell than the average bridge strike (which tend to just take the roof, like a sardine tin).

I must admit I'm very surprised that no one got hurt, how that was the case I don't know.

But one positive side of this damaged bus is it would mean a very modern open top bus potentially!

It does indeed look like damage has occurred too far down to easily convert it in to an open top bus. If it was just the roof that was damaged then it would be fairly easy to convert it. It might be possible to repair it though. It would seem a shame to scrap such a new bus.
