Tree damage to rolling stock - Chiltern

Chiltern services have tonight been badly affected by two trains hitting a tree just south of High Wycombe. They have tweeted two pictures. I've attached one. Not good.

Won't do stock availability much good. Monday may be fun given there's a block all day tomorrow Banbury / Bicester, so little chance to move trains around.

Thankfully, it seems that nobody was hurt.

How are Chiltern doing overall for DMU availability? How long will the affected units likely be out of traffic for repairs for?

Rather unlucky for Chiltern to lose 2 units to the same tree, let alone being one of the "New" 168/3s as well. Glad everyone is safe, I think the damage looks worse than it probably is though as I believe the Turbostar cab fronts are made from glass fibre.

Were there any previous reports of shortages?

Assuming not they are 2 units down then, unless they can take the fairly obvious step of splitting the vehicles up and making one good unit (if they're the same type).

I doubt they are that badly off for stock, with the arrival of the extra 168s providing some breathing space. And they were still running crew training trips on the Oxford route after the passenger service started.

All of our 165, 168 & 172 fleet can couple and work together. From what i saw of 168113 last night, and im not a qualified engineer, the main bulk of the damage appears to be to the GRP shell and the coupler box. The hard shell behind appears to have stood up to the impact forces. As i said im not an engineer so we will have to wait for the unit to be inspected to see if there is any further damage that is hidden.

The TPE 170's had the TMS computer taken out altogether. Became a drinks holder for TPE drivers and Con's

Its obvious that the easy to see damage, that might look dramatic to some, is only shattered plastic. I have been trying to determine if the glass is damaged - seems not to be. If the glass is not damaged then I suspect that no steel parts took a significant enough blow to distort. If the glass is damaged then it could merely be because of direct contact with the tree.

I know with cars a cracked windscreen can indicate a written of car body IF the glass was not directly hit.

I saw a pair of Chiltern 170s on the 12:10 from Marylebone/14:55 from Moor Street on Monday. I'm not sure if this is because of this but does anyone have any inside info about them and if they will stick on that turn?

Eeek. Er well that's a broken window then. Fingers crossed its as a result of a direct hit from a tree rather than a distorted cab end. I am assuming the window would not be mounted on the GRP !.

Thanks for the picture. It also shows the poor drivers point of view and what sort of surprise he/she might have got especially if the tree did that rather than a distorted train body !.

I assume you meant 172s? Yesterday the 14:05 Oxford Parkway was worked by a two car 165 which I found a bit surprising.
