Travelling with luggage

(Sorry, didn't really know where to post this)
Will be travelling by train with a suitcase for the first time. Is there a significant risk of it being stolen if I leave it in the luggage racks at the end of the carriage, and if so is there anything I can do to minimise this risk? Is getting up at each stop and keeping an eye on it a bit ridiculous, or a good idea?

It's more common people taking the wrong suitcase than intentional theft, so it's not a bad idea to make yours distinctive.

If I had a pound for every luggage mixup where, when asked to describe the missing item, was told it was a plain black trolley case, about airplane cabin bag size, with no strap or luggage tag - which could describe 95% of the bags on board the train - I'd be a very rich man.

Keeping a regular check on your luggage is a sensible precaution, I would normally check on my bags around major stations rather than at every one otherwise you'd never have chance to sit back and relax.

If you are in trains with back-to-back seating bays, so most 1st class and some standard, there are large and mostly unused spaces behind the seating bays that can be within your eyeline at all times.

It's a GWR 80x. Annoyingly I realised that my seat reservation happened to be pretty close to the luggage racks, only for the train to be cancelled this morning!

That could basically describe my bag! I have got a couple of brightly coloured keyrings on it now though which should help. I think a lot of the stations along this route would be considered major but it's a relatively short journey of just under an hour so doesn't matter too much if its not very relaxing (though I think the train will end up being quite busy now, so perhaps not much chance anyways! )
