Travelling with a Derbyshire Wayfarer

If you live in Derbyshire or can access Beeston/Nottingham railway station then you can buy a Derbyshire Wayfarer which for certain journeys by rail can end up saving you money.

Burton-upon-Trent to Sheffield is an example of a route that can be done on the day off peak for £11.60 return.

For £11.60 or £16.50 from Beeston/Nottingham station you can get a day out on the railways covering an area to Uttoxeter, Burton-upon-Trent, Sheffield and New Mills to name a few of the boundry limits of the day rover.

I have found it an excellent way to spend the day exploring the railway network around Derbyshire and beyond with the added bonus of the rover being valid on most bus services within Derbyshire too.

Yes, this ticket offers excellent value especially if you can make good use of the extended validity to Burton.

Concurring on the excellent value of this ticket, I used it a number of times when HSTs still ruled the roost on Sheffield to London services.

Still need to get up there again one day to do some shack scratching and get more 222s in the book!

You can also get a group version for £21.00 for a group of up to 2 adults and 3 children - or a dog travelling in place of a child (for the buses).

There's some spectacular scenery to be seen as well, from both bus and train

I always use it to Sheffield and beyond, its £5 than a return even with a railcard!
Before I heard about it I couldn't believe what people were over paying for that journey!

Also you do not have to live in Derbyshire to get the 1/2 price concession ticket, any proof of age that you are over 60 will do, whether you have a Railcard, Bus Pass or not.
I have used it for journeys from West Yorks to Birmingham and saved a lot by buying a day return to Sheffield, then use the Wayfarer to Burton, then a day return Burton-Birmingham. The only restriction apart from the Mon-Fri peak is that you need to use trains which call at Burton.

Furthermore, buy the date it yourself scratch-off versions from Sheffield Bus Station and they are valid until 31/12/2017!....that gets you through THREE more annual fare increases!

I can use my disabled bus pass to purchase one for £8.25 at concessionary rates from the ticket counter at Nottingham which gives me an excellent value day out ticket for exploring Derbyshire's rail network or using it as a part ticket to areas beyond the wayfarers boundary limits.

Derbyshire Wayfarer tickets (scratch off date cards) are available from Derbyshire County Council either through their website, or by ringing them I believe. If you don't use any by the final date on the scratch card, you should post them off to Derbyshire CC and they will replace them with upto date cards. Most bus drivers (but not First SY) in Derbyshire also sell Derbyshire Wayfarers , though I have never tried these on trains.
