Travelling short

Hope someone can help me out here....

I have an advance ticket from Manchester to Yatton (near Bristol) for a few weeks time, however my friend in Yatton is no longer able to put me up I'm going to be staying in Bristol itself.

Am I going to be able to jump off the train when it passes through Temple Meads and be able to leave the station? or could I buy a single ticket from Yatton to Temple Meads and use that to leave the station, but not actually have travelled from to / from Yatton?

You'll have to change in Bristol for Yatton anyway. You are permitted to use station facilities, including the ticket office and any shops that are the 'unpaid' side of the barrier. There's a pub at the station too, on station premises. Is that on the unpaid side? I'm not sure, last time I recall going straight onto a train from it but maybe that was before barriers were installed.

In theory if you then step out onto the street, an undercover RPI who has followed you into the ticket office, and into WH Smith, and into that pub on the station concourse, and then seen you enter the street and knew you had an Advance ticket could ask you to re-enter the station and demand you either get on a train or charge you loads of money. If you refused, they could call BTP and after several hours they'd turn up and they may demand that you get on a train to Yatton (if they have nothing better to do). I cannot recommend taking that risk. :P

The pub, Bonapartes, is rail-side, with no seperate access from the concourse. However WH Smith is on the concourse side, so a request to visit WHS or the ticket office will get you through the barrier.

Technically, you should travel with an Advance ticket as per the itinerary, but I'm of the opinion that a fare has been paid so there is no attempt to de-fraud. There may be occasions where travilling short on an Advance ticket yields a saving, and the railways quite rightly should prevent this, but this is unlikely on a MAN-YAT fare versus a MAN-BRI.

Like Yorkie, I am unable to recommend you take that risk.
Far safer to wait while it stops.

Not quite sure what I'm going to do yet, but think I'll probably buy a ticket from a station close by and just use that..... All I need now is for Northern to announce their services for a separate journey I have planned whilst the signallers are striking...
