Would anyone like to comment on the below comment from TrainSplit customer support? It was in response to a friend’s enquiry about using a Waterloo to Weymouth advance ticket to travel to Dorchester South, but more general advice would be appreciated. Is the legal position that ending a journey early is only possible on tickets with break of journey validity?

Yes, generally starting short, ending short and breaking and resuming are considered part of the same thing by the railway, possibly because they're part of the same definitions in the NRCoT ("You may start, end or break..." or some such wording). I don't know what legal precedent exists, though.

In BR days this was seen differently - rather than them having a problem with you ending short on an APEX or similar or the outward part of a Saver, you just couldn't resume if you ended (they wouldn't let you back in). I don't quite know when the definition of this started creeping.

Trainsplit customers services are correct, finishing short on an Advance ticket is against the terms and conditions of the ticket.

That said, (unpublished) policy of the rail industry is that although Advance tickets are intended to be used only between the origin and destination stations shown on the ticket, there may be occasions where a passenger joins the correct train but at a later station, or alights earlier than the indicated destination. Although this is not strictly in accordance with the rules for Advance tickets, the Rail industry has agreed that in such cases, no additional fare should be charged (unless there is clear evidence of intent to try and avoid a higher fare).
