Travelling from Ely to New Southgate?

Today I'm travelling from Ely to New Southgate, on a ticket from Ely to London Kings Cross/London terminals.

My question is, is my ticket valid to get the train from Ely to London Kings Cross and then get a train back from Kings Cross to New Southgate?

Two tickets exist on this route. 1 direct (ie change at WGC and Cambridge) and a higher priced on to double back at either Kings Cross or Finsbury Park.

No. Once you reach Kings Cross the ticket is not valid for further travel (unless you're going to Moorgate on the tube, and assuming it is to London Terminals rather than London Kings Cross). You will need another ticket to get to New Southgate. Alternatively, change at (something like) Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City to get off at New Southgate without ever going via London (I'm assuming it is not an Advance ticket).

OK, you could visit New Southgate on this ticket but do that but you either need to:

• break your outward journey at New Southgate (ie. travel outward direct and return via London), or
  
• break your return journey at New Southgate (ie, travel outward via London and return direct), or
  
• finish 'short' on both legs (and avoid London on both legs).

You may use the return portion of your London to Ely ticket to break your journey at New Southgate, yes. The return portion would then be valid for your return journey to be resumed from New Southgate directly to Ely.

If you wish to travel from London to New Southgate via London in both directions then you would need to get an Ely to New Southgate ticket routed "+ Any Permitted"; if you wish to excess your existing ticket you should do so at the earliest opportunity.

Thankyou for all your advice. In the end I took the tube from Kings Cross as it turns out I had enough money to do the journey without topping up as my oyster card expires on the 30th September.

But I will keep all this very helpful and useful information in mind for future journeys.
