Once again they have left our local fields in a right state, complete with human excrement this time! Obviously the present law is inadequate of dealing with these people sufficiently, so I would advocate tracking them down and confiscating one caravan from their convoy to sell and raise funds to pay for the clean-up. Good idea or what?

Really? What law prevents the apprehension and trial of people who have committed a criminal offence?

Sadly, there are groups like these that let the side down. Unfortunately, they are unlikely to be brought to account.

We have to put up with it, and accept this behaviour. If we do not, we're "racist". :| We can't enforce anything against them because if we state an intention to take appropriate action, they will threaten to make bombs.

That's the understatement of the decade.

They're effectively allowed to do what they want.

95% of travellers are out of the public eye and live perfectly respectably. The other 5% ruin it for everyone else. Folk a few miles away from me actually petrol bombed them...the contempt I have for both sides in that case is unbelievable.

We can't enforce anything against them because if we state an intention to take appropriate action, they will threaten to make bombs.

If that threat was made, the travellers would find that the law does come into force as even the threat of bomb-making is classified as contravention of Common Law. I am sure that there are those on the forum who will be able to cite the exact legal position on this matter.

Really? So what were the ones I met spending time at Her Majesty's hotels, doing there?

Two anti traveller threads started within a few days of each other on RailUK. I hope just coincidence.

It might be just a coincidence but people are getting fed up with them. They seem to be getting away with everything, anywhere they go crime goes up and the police seem as though they cannot do anything. The sites they stop at are a mess when they leave and cost tax payers to clean up.

I remember visiting the Crossley Engines site near to Ashburys station in Manchester on business in the 1980's and there was a large public house nearby called The Travellers Rest. In the window was a large hand-written sign saying "NO TRAVELLERS". This featured in a story in the Manchester Evening News in the same week that I was there.

Quoted for truthery. Particularly yorkie's first point, despite that as far as I know "traveller" is not a protected "race" in the UK (it is in Ireland).

It reminds me of a time when I was in an airport check-in queue with my family and some travellers were in the next line acting in an uncouth manner. The person ahead of us in the queue made some comment about how inappropriate "those Irish are", to which my mother promptly interjected that they were carrying British passports!

Not all travellers are the same. The majority live peacefully, respectfully and privately. How many of us have actually taken the time to get to know a traveller?

Many live in secrecy and do not brag about being one simply because they fear they will lose their jobs and become social out casts. It should not have to be like that.

And it certainly doesnt reflect well on us when we judge them purely on the media and the stigma they unfortunatley have attached to them.

How many of us have lived next door to scum neighbours who play music all hours, vandalise property etc.....does that make all us house dwellers the same?

While i agree that there are those who indulge in petty theft, and more serious theft and other crime....there are treble those living with in the law.

Ive treated travellers at work and have been treated far better and with more respect by them than the average brick dwelling drunk.

I base my opinions on an individual, on how they treat me and others, not on whether they live in a caravan and certinly not on how the media portray them.

We have about 5 or 6 instances like this across the borough of Wigan every year. It's all well and good sticking up for them but when they intrude on your life, it's no laughing matter. They should be kicked off the public fields within 24 hours of arriving. The way I see it is they don't pay any council tax so they're not entitled to be there. If they insist on doing this, take their vehicles away from them and crush them. Simple

Strange, my post was not a direct attack at your opinions. I know they can be troublesome and leave a mess behind...in Nottinghmashire this is rife.

My point i was making is this.....they are not all the same, and the good should not have to live with a bad name for the sake of those who do make trouble.

If they are forever being moved on where are they supposed to go? Nimbys got to great lengths to ensure that councils do not grant perminant sites for travellers, so they take refuge on local fields and whatever strips of land they can. I'm sure if sites where set up specifically they would go there and fields would be left alone.

Why should their vehicles be crushed because they dont pay COUNCIL tax.....that should only be done if they dont have road tax.

If they are travellers how can they have jobs, that means they are living in one place so why not get a house.I have lived next door to scum neighbours but at least they pay council tax and dont use the garden as a toilet.
Why do the media portray them like that if there is no truth, did you see tv on monday where the police would not go on a travellers site after chasing there van for over one hour,do you think they would not come to your house if you did something wrong?

Lol no....We the tax payer pay their concil tax because half of our scum communities are on benefits and refuse to work. and produce kids at an alarming rate!!

Many travellers have jobs. Infact if you got your nose out the air for five minutes and got to know one or two you might be surprised.

As i said before....there are many who indulge in crime.....there are those who dont. I say again, i judge an individual, not a certain group.

I had a traveller try to nick my landrover.....that didnt make me think jesus they are all scum!

Ive known the police not go into certain situations and waited forback up on numerous estates in sheffield....And what about our lovely boys who throw bricks and other missiles at our emergency services? Our football thugs etc etc. Come on crime isnt limited to just travellers.

Their vehicles should be crushed because they are using them to commit multiple criminal offences everywhere they go. Some of these vehicles are brand new and cost thousands so if they can afford to pay for them, they can afford to pay for permanent housing. And how they can get insurance with having no fixed abode is beyond me.

As someone who started the other thread please tell me where I have stated I am "anti traveller". That thread was started about a specific location where the fact is the majority of the travellers are there illegally, have built without planning permission, have built on green belt land and are threatening serious violence. These are the kinds of people I am "anti" whether they live in caravans, tents, houses, hotels or flats.

I guess your post proves Yorkie's point that if you say something negative about something or someone (no matter how true it) is you get labled as being racist or anti <Insert word here>

What, every single one of them???? My god, you must have spies nation wide to know that.

Do you actually have proof of all these criminal offences?

Yes it's called leaving hazardous waste on public fields (needles, excrement, dirty nappies and chemicals) as well as paper, plastic and god knows what else. The photograph in the link is evidence enough. I suggest until you experience firsthand what these people get up to, you should reframe from defending them and their criminal ways

Ok...We have a community district nurse who comes fom a traveller site, she works hard and is thoroughly respected by her colleagues.

During the heavy snow of last december the travellers from our local site helped clear roads along side those who home dwell. We see them in our local shop and always say good morning and interact in our community rather well.

Those who leave rubbish and hazardous waste should be punished, as should anyone who breaks the law. Why are you intent on tarring them ALL with the same brush. I am defending the law abiding travelling community that do exist.

Living amongst them i do experience first hand what "THESE PEOPLE" get upto. And i repeat for the fifth time, not all are the same. Nor will i refrain from defending those who i know to be decent people.

And I suggest, strange6 that you don't tar every single member of the various traveling communities with the same brush. One story in a local paper does not a nationwide problem make.

With respect, you are the one accusing an entire group of being criminals and that they should all have their cars crushed when it is plainly obvious that they are not all like that, so it is a little hypocritical to be asking Kernowfen to go out and get some experience.

Oh, and as a general point, just because someone doesn't live in a conventional house doesn't mean they are any less than you or me.

I completely see your point. My original response to this thread was to defend the law abiders in the travelling community, not the idiots that also exist.

I have been refering to the story in the link and from my own experience. If people can't abide by the law of the land then they should be punished, travellers or no travellers. Where have I stated that ALL travellers are the same, anyway? Of course they're not! I'm sure there are a lot of very nice people who roam about but like I say, we have multiple instances like this throughout the year and if people can't behave and obey the law then they should be punished and prevented from breaking it.

The present law is inadequate of dealing with them simply because all it does is move them elsewhere, thereby creating another problem for another council. If you've bothered to read the Dale Farm thread, you will see that the problem isn't these travellers, its the way the law and the council treat them. If the council weren't so quick to evict every traveller camp, we wouldn't have this problem of rubbish everywhere and new illegal camps springing up. Punishing them by eviction is counter-productive and self-defeating. Instead, more productive solutions such as offering them temporary accommodation would go a long way to solve the problem of rubbish etc.

And how is reacting to this by committing a clear-cut criminal act such as 'confiscating a caravan' going to help?

Oh, so it's the council and laws fault of local peoples' lives being made a misery is it? I thought I had read everything until i had read this!
Look, I have no problem with people living a life on the road but they should be respectful of other people and the environment.
