Do NR have particular requirements as to max travel time for signallers? I can't find anything specific on the Careers section

Not that I'm aware. As long as you can get to work on time and your commute doesn't cause excessive fatigue, I don't think managers are especially bothered.

I've heard of signallers commuting daily to big London boxes from as far afield as the Isle of Wight and Lincolnshire. Wouldn't want to do it personally, but...

Alternatively, if the box works to a 12 hour roster (typically four on, four off) there is the option of staying locally for a sequence of shifts. One bloke at Ashford lived in Bristol because his other half didn't want to move. He used to drive up for each 'run' and slept in his van in the car park!

Thanks - is this written anywhere do you know? Why would it be different for new entrants?

I've seen it written somewhere but don't know where. Don't know why different for newbies but if they want to transfer someone internally gives them more choice.

Because you can set new criteria for new entrants but existing employees have existing contracts on different terms. Standards change over the years and new entrants require the new standards yet existing employee will come under PT&R conditions.

Sure - although with housing costs it must get more difficult! I was surprised not to see any detail with the job adverts. The TOCs make it clear from the beginning.

Mac may well be right but there's no such stipulation in my contract and I've never seen it referred to in company materials.

I had a 180 minute (road) / 240 minute (train) daily commute to my first box and no-one so much as batted an eyelid.
