“I forgot to buy a ticket before getting on the TransPennine Express train. When I saw ticket inspections happening, I panicked and bought a ticket on my phone, but it was for a later service and it was purchased during the inspection. The inspector checked the purchase time, realised it was bought during the inspection, took my name, date of birth, and address, and issued me a Travel Irregularity Notice. This is my first time and I’m anxious about the consequences

Assuming you gave correct contact details, wait till they write to you, asking for your version of events, and come back for more advice. Generally, you will be able to settle without going to court; it will cost you the fare plus perhaps £100-150 for admin.

Hi thanks for your response means a lot
The journey was from durham to newcastle
I was distracted due to some personal stress I forgot to buy tickets as soon as I saw the inspector I bought a ticket again made another bad decision

I bought a ticket 5 minutes before arriving the final station but it which was for later depature of same operater, TPE.
I was on the train for 19:07 but I bought for 20:07 when I realized I didn't had a valid ticket . This was my first time in such situation.
I always buy tickets frok trainpal, there was a ticket machine at the station where I boarded the train.

I presume it was an advance ticket for the 20;07 rather than a flexible single fare (assuming TPE partake in advance fares on the day on that route)?

No, it was purchased after departure so it wasn’t valid, doesn’t make any difference whether it was an advance for that train, an advance for a different train, or a flexible ticket.

Try not to worry too much, it’s very likely that you’ll be able to sort this out by paying a bit of money, probably around £155.

Just wait for the letter to arrive. When it does, come back and we can help.
