Travel Card Valididty

Sorry, but i have another ticket related question.

I want to go to Londo nmore often at the Weekend and just potter about. I live down here now and have done the main tourist sites and just want to explore.

I went last week and got a MKC - London retrun with a 1-6 zone travel card. My questuions are:

1) On WHAT services is this card valid - tube and LO ONLY? Is suburban rail included?
2) Where can i find out what i am allwoed to travel on?
3) Is there a boundary map anywhere?
4) Is there anything else i should consider?

thanks - i am still a bit naive about the ways of the south. Dont get me started on an oyster - i dont udertand those things either!

TfL travelcard zone map here:

it is not the current one as East London Line is still shown as closed on it.

You can use any tube, DLR or National rail service within those zones. (e.g. you can go to Hampton court from Waterloo on a travelcard)
exceptions where you cannot use it are:
Heathrow Express
HS1

you can use it on London bus services. In many cases the validity on buses goes beyond the travelcard zone boundary (e.g. 84 it is valid to Potters Bar)

There are some special arrangements for using metropolitan line & watford LO services which go beyond zone 6 - those travelcard to include those zones can only be purchased from LU/LO offices/machines if I remember correctly.

1) All Tube, bus, rail*, tram and DLR services. Basically, all public transport apart from boats and bike hire.
2) TfL.
3) Everywhere in Zones 1-6 on this map. Bus services don't fall into the zone categorisation - any Travelcard is valid on any TfL bus.
4) Can't think of anything... Suppose Oyster might be cheaper if you're only making a couple of journeys, but Travelcards are generally best.

* except Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow, and HS1 services between St Pancreas and Stratford.

valid on tube, bus London Overground, National Rail services, Docklands Light Railway and Croydon Tramlink. Just about everything except High Speed 1, Heathrow Express or Heathrow Connect beyond Hayes.

Everything (LU/NR/LO/DLR/Buses/Trams) except Heathrow Express, Heathrow Connect between Hayes&Harlington and Heathrow, and SET between St Pancras and Stratford.

Probably not if you're combining it with a return to London from outside the zones.

Oyster isn't that good if you do lots of roaming around. There's too much scope for falling foul of maximum journey times.

I note that boats are excluded. Are they TfL assets or private. I saw a river bus service at Westminster the other week and wondered. ( apologies - off topic slightly)

A Travelcard gives one third off many boats on the Thames.

There are some special arrangements for using metropolitan line & watford LO services which go beyond zone 6 - those travelcard to include those zones can only be purchased from LU/LO offices/machines if I remember correctly.

They can be issued anywhere. To issue a valid travelcard including Zones 7-9, the origin should be set to a station inside Zones 7-9, such as Bushey / Chorleywood / Amersham Und, and the destination set to 0035 (Zones 1-6). This will then give the travelcard routed 'AAA 7-9'.

I had a run in with Watford Junction ticket office who refused to sell me that ticket, despite me already holding a ticket into central London from there. Come to think about it, I'm still yet to hear back from LM Customer Service so I think I'm gonna have to chase them up on the matter.

There are no longer any TfL buses out as far as Slough. I don't know of any bus maps better than those given by bb21 (which incidentally show the true routes of the Underground lines, which is quite cool).

Any travelcard is valid on Route 81 towards Hounslow.

It is not valid on the non-TfL 71-77 services.

(Note that if you want to go into Heathrow most services are free to use for a couple of stops past the airport - paid for by BAA as there's no pedestrian access) - shown by the green boundary on the map below:

May not be long before this is changed, though. I've heard a TfL contract route *may* be created/extended to PB and the 84 won't accept Oysters anymore (and then will probably be cut back to Potters Bar).

TfL decided the 614 wasn't going to accept Oysters and Travelcards anymore, a similar route going from Hatfield straight down the A1(M) to Barnet, then across to Edgware and Queensbury. Shame, as it's the only useful link between Barnet and Edgware (and now quite a few journeys skip Barnet).

In 99% of cases, if it's a red bus in London it'll accept Travelcards. They should all have a small TfL roundel to the lower right of the windscreen (on the side of the entrance door) although as said before, the bus maps are the best way to check. Make sure you only look at routes in black and red, as green ones don't take Travelcards!

They used to produce a list but I couldn't find it on the TfL website.

Looking at the TfL Conditions of Carriage, they're valid for the entire length of TfL contracted routes, including sections outside the zonal area, and on the following sections of other operators routes:

• 84 - New Barnet Station - Potters Bar Cranborne Road
• 402 - Bromley North Station - Knockholt Pound Three Horseshoes
• 477 - Orpington Station - Crockenhill Road Crouch Farm

The CoC can be found on this page and the relevant sections can be found on page 30, and note A3 on page 34.

Although they do say "This information can be changed at any time" yes, that is correct now... unsure of the arrangements right now on the last 2 as the method I heard to use was mentioned earlier by others.

(Annoying, the section below says they will replace a damaged ticket free of charge, when I asked they simply said "show it to the person on the gate" and because I was trying to see specific trains and going all over London I had to do it quite a few times, so I asked "Can't you replace it?" and they said "Only the station you got it from can" ...grrrr)

Presumably that's now £1.30
