I'm travelling between Munich and Ried Im Innkreis in Austria in a few days by rail, on Thursday 11th July. I already have the tickets booked but when looking up the route there appears to be a warning about what believe is the equivalent of a rail replacement service (bus?) for the last leg between Simbach and Ried Im Innkreis.

This is the itinerary

München Ost ab 13:17 RB 40 (27031)
Mühldorf(Oberbay) an 14:17

Mühldorf(Oberbay) ab 14:37 RB 41 (27271)
Simbach(Inn) an 15:13

Simbach(Inn) ab 15:18 R 5977
Ried im Innkreis an 15:59

Am I right in thinking there is a bus substitution on that last leg on the day, and if so, are the times for arrival affected ? Anything else I should be aware of?

I've just checked on the OBB journey planner, and it's offered me that exact itinerary with no indication there's any bus substitution. The engineering work page also doesn't list anything relevant. Where are you seeing the warning?

It seems as though some Austrian regional trains are still given the 'R' designation (rather than 'RB'). I get the same as the others, and the journey time matches the regular PDF timetable available here: https://www.oebb.at/en/dam/jcr:05f0e4de-caa6-46c3-a49f-f033bf468413/151_24.pdf

I see it only when doing a google search. Admittedly, the section warning is written in German, and I am trying to translate it...
Let me see if I can link to it.

Google has somehow found a couple of unrelated engineering works that are well off your route - one for the branch between Wels and Grünau im Almtal, and another for a section of the Vienna S-Bahn. I'm guessing that's because both of them affect 'R' services - but that's used for all regional stopping services across the whole of Austria!

Ah great, thanks.

Thanks for clarifying, was a bit nervous about this as couldn't work out what was going on. The way google presents the information was not that clear, especially to a non native speaker :)

Google is not a good source of transport information in general, unless you know there is a reliable up to date GTFS feed from the operator. Here the national operators have good web information so I wouldn't look anywhere else.

This is bad, Google interpreting 'Linie:R' as a single entity for all local trains in a country! It hints at the US urban origins of Google Transit.

Haven't checked recently, but Google used to give years out of date bus routes in Spain where it had scraped the data from web sites; it had the bus station in San Cristobal (Tenerife) in the wrong place several years after it and the routes moved and it can give rough intervals in places where there is a real timetable.
