The GCR derailment thread reminded me of something I saw at Marchwood.

From what I've seen, the right hand line is bidirectional, with the left hand track used for passing.
I'm assuming that the points going from the right hand track to nowhere are traps to protect the single line.
Wouldn't something derailed there have a fair risk of hitting the signalling equipment? Not as bad as the infamous footbridge one, but still?
Only noticed when digging up this photo that the points on the left line are pointing up the dead track. I'm guessing that these then are also acting as a trap to protect the single line from the passing loop?

I don't know if there was anything at Fawley.
If the entire branch was clear, ie nothing beyond Totton, would these points be set this way out of habit ("These are usually set this way, so I will set them this way now"), by default (Signal is at danger, therefore points automatically set) or by a rule ("Points MUST be set to protect a line if X, Y and Z")

Edit: That's a big image, I'll do it as a link rather than inline

Na, looks like if the driver was asleep and it got past the dumpy bag, it'd end up in the trees.

Whilst there are no passenger trains to protect I think there are particular issues on this line which make trapping very desirable, namely explosives and petroleum products!

Both sets of traps (do they lead into sand drags? I can't quite make it out) are standing normal in that photo. The locking will usually require it to be so only if a movement is to be signalled on the line being 'protected - but it'd be usual to restore them to normal as soon as a movement has cleared them, if only to keep a tidy frame and avoid walking into levers! More importantly, the signalling regs (TS1 9.3) state that (my words) they must be set to protect the adjacent line unless a movement is being made. In some power installations, traps will self-normalise as soon as a movement has passed clear of them.
