Transport TV Programmes Last Night (20/10) on BBC4

Did anyone see the 2 programmes about public transport that were on BBC 4 last night, (Tue 20 Oct.) ?

One was showing old flim clips about many closed railways in Wales and also some preserved lines.

The other was about the paddle steamers and their successors, that plied around the UK coastline, but mainly in this case, the Bristol Channel and Clyde. Again these had lots of old film clips.

Both programmes I thought were facinating and it was good to see that as well as mainy lines and locos being preserved, so too are some of the ships, which were very luxurious.

They were interviewing passengers and crew who used to sail or ride on these ships/trains. It was very nostalgic as they all bought back happy memories of yesteryear.

The Waverley Ship is still plying it's trade and a new addition seems to have come back this year, the Bristol which is a motor ship rather than paddle steamer. I think too, there maybe some others; SS Sheildhall? Medway? and Kingswear.

I also remember my mother and grandmother talking about ships they went on, that went from London & Gravesend to the Kent and Essex coasts, Southend, Clacton and Margate.

I think that those were the day cruises leaving from Tower Pier in the pool of London. I went on one as a child to Southend. There were two sailing that day, we were on the Daffodil, the other was the Royal Sovereign. It took about three hours to get to Southend Pier. I don't know when they stopped running but here is a webpage giving some nostalgic memories of them:

Thank you for that link. Yes, I recall hearing about the Daffodil, I think there was another called the "Iris" too.
