Looking at some of the recent videos on YouTube, I don't think it will be too long before the new road bridge is lifted in at Deighton.

Deighton - Whitacre Street

The north side looks to have a lot of work, but no tops on the abutment yet.

The South side doesn't look started yet. The plans show the new bridge is a bit wider, so does the car park need to come up to level first?

But if there is one thing learnt from the whole project, things move very quickly when they are ready.

There are 3 mid week closures coming up from Huddersfield to Leeds in May. As well as most weekends in May and June. A lot could happen.

And then 4 midweek closures of via Dewsbury in June.

See https://www.networkrailmediacentre....ers-behind-trus-next-series-of-major-upgrades
From Saturday 30 May to Saturday 27 June, a final phase of upgrade works across Batley and Dewsbury will be delivered. Once completed, and following the final commissioning of the new lifts, Batley station will reopen and provide customers with step-free access for the first time, alongside improved customer facilities. The platforms will be extended to 150 metres.
It is the utilities that take ages on bridges. I think Leeds Road, Wheatleys colliery, and Colne bridge road all waiting now. And it has obviously been the big job for the new bridge in Ravensthorpe.

50,000 tonnes of ballast, 11.5km of track, 5,515 sleepers: the numbers behind TRU’s next series of major upgrades

Region & Route: Eastern
Throughout May and June, Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) teams will take another huge step in delivering faster, more frequent trains on a greener railway across the North, through a series of engineering works between Huddersfield and Leeds.

From Saturday 2 May until Monday 25 May, 56 engineering trains will be deployed along this stretch of railway as 6.2km of track is renewed and over 21,000 tonnes of ballast is laid. These upgrades will help deliver smoother, more reliable journeys for customers travelling along the 70-mile route.

51 foundation bases will also be installed, which will support overhead line equipment (OLE) and electrify journeys in the future.

Brighouse station will be used as a rail and bus interchange location during this period, allowing more customers to remain on trains by taking advantage of the diversionary routes which TRU has invested £100m in. Other rail services will run as close as possible to the closure areas, with replacement buses in operation to keep customers moving.

Dewsbury will reopen with platforms extended to 200 metres, enabling longer, higher-capacity trains with more seats to serve the stations in the future.

This phase of work will see 66 engineering trains deployed to deliver over 5km of track renewals, including laying over 27,000 tonnes of ballast and around 800m of drainage, while the installation of 67 OLE masts will support the electrification of the line.

The TRU team will also take to Huddersfield station on weekends during this two-month period. Platform remodelling, subway excavations and the construction of both a new staircase and footbridge will be undertaken, while work on the historic ‘Euston style’ roof will also see the canopy extended further. These upgrades form a critical part of the transformation of the station, which will be fully complete in early 2027.

On weekdays, customers will be kept moving between Huddersfield and Leeds via the Wakefield diversionary route. At weekends, trains will run as close as possible to the closure area and replacement buses will run between Huddersfield and Leeds.

Customers are urged to check their journey in advance at nationalrail.co.uk, or with their train operator. Journey times will change, and some customers may need to use rail replacement buses for all or part of their trip.

Tim’s latest video

Huddersfield bridge and more
A major milestone in Huddersfield — the new railway bridge over John William Street is now open to traffic and pedestrians.

This marks a significant step forward in the TransPennine Route Upgrade (TRU), following months of intensive engineering work including the removal of the old bridge, construction of new abutments, and installation of new bridge spans.

With the road now reopened, the transformation at Huddersfield is clearly visible. Structural works are largely complete, with final snagging, drainage systems, and finishing touches still ongoing beneath and around the bridge...

In this video:

  • John William Street bridge reopening in Huddersfield
  • Bridge span installation and construction timeline
  • Engineering details, drainage, and finishing works
  • Deighton station construction and embankment stabilisation
  • Soil pinning and groundwork for future tracks
  • Real impact of construction on local residents
  • Utility diversions, relocation, and community response
  • Ongoing works across the TransPennine Route Upgrade

It looks like the Wheatley Colliery overbridge near Huddersfield was knocked down on the weekend. The replacement was already in position, so maybe the cycleway over the railway will be reopening soon. Another sign of progress on the plan.

Re Batley Station Area.

I noticed today that a new set of points are being built up within a compound near to the existing cross over.

The design and direction of the turn out suggests an opposite set up to the existing crossover!

Another possibility is that they are for a passing loop which has been rumoured for the Batley area for many years.

Maybe members with a bit more knowledge can offer a better explanation than me?

A second find of the day was what I believe is a speed indicator board displaying 30 over 75 at the start of platform two extension.

Is this for line speed or is this displayed for other reasons ?

Also, If this is line speed, do we know what the finished line speed will be after the Batley subway is filled in and the track re-aligned?

Great pictures thank you! Good to see the platform extensions coming along.

Could the new set of points be for a renewal at Dewsbury? It would match the entrance to platform 1 from the west.

Also that sign is a warning of an upcoming temporary speed restriction, limiting freight trains to 30mph, so the restriction is beyond the station. I'm not sure if there are plans to increase line speed above 75mph here.

Although Tim and Sarah are producing fantastic update videos on YouTube - so are the Railway Engineering Institute - formerly the PWI.

This is by definition, more technical. I will try and provide meaningful quotations.

In 2025:
79039 Tonnes ballast
21845metres of CWR (continuous welded rail)
100165 Tonnes of spoil removed
17987 sleepers
3040 Tonnes sand
6887 Tonnes MOT type 1

I do think this is likely as I’ve noticed there’s 4 sets of new rail in the gap between the rails on the Huddersfield platform, so perhaps this blockade is Dewsbury track renewals. Which I suspect will also see the trackbed being lowered. (Not sure on this)

Does anyone know what the main TRU projects will be during the merry month of May? There's lots of stats about X amount of new track and X amount of masts for OLE, but not much about locations for work during the upcoming possession.

Bradley Junction 4 tracking is the big one. Lots of work between Huddersfield and Heaton Lodge Jn essentially
Sarah Bell has already added a YouTube video showing the work from early this morning.

And here it is. Well worth a watch imho. At 11:10 there is a very clever piece of kit for lifting long sections of rail from the sleepers.

60 engineering trains during the possessions in May.

From the Transpennine Route Upgrade website about the May closure:
Works are progressing across the Bradley Junction area, between Deighton and Mirfield, where teams are carrying out track and drainage renewals to improve reliability. As part of these upgrades, the Whitacre Street bridge deck is being installed, alongside ongoing signalling work and testing in the area.

At Deighton, construction continues on the station rebuild, helping to deliver a more accessible and improved experience for passengers.

In Huddersfield, work is ongoing to extend the station canopy, with scaffolding in place to support the upgrades. Strengthening of the Huddersfield viaduct is also nearing completion, with teams focusing on final snagging works.

Elsewhere, bridge works are underway at Wheatley’s Bridge in Mirfield, as part of the wider programme to replace the existing structure with a new bridge.

Thanks for posting a link to the video update. I now have a better understanding of where the work is taking place. I wonder if Bradley Junction is essentially a like-for-like renewal of the current layout, including the sandpit run-off, or whether they'll make some tweaks while they're at it.

Not sure whether the sandtrap will be replaced like-for-like, but a major improvement is the proposed speed restriction for the junction and crossover to the Up Huddersfield line being increased from the former 15mph to 40mph.

Is the intention that at the end of the blockade the Bradley junction will be left in it's final position? I.e. trains will run on the slow line alignment through that area until the four tracking is commissioned.

I would assume that this is indeed the case. There appears to be adequate room for the two fast lines to be installed without having to slew or amend the alignment of the slow lines at this location. The new (yet to be instated) junction pointwork which is already on site will probably be part of the final trackwork layout here.
The fast lines commissioning will surely be part of the final phase of the trackwork changes of the four-tracking works?

The Sectional Appendix has been updated as of 26 April showing these speed but also including the sand drag, and the chainage suggests it's the same place as shown in Google maps. Have to say I'm somewhat surprised this is staying as they tend to be risk-assessed out - but it's still 35mph up to the sand drag turnout so if this is the old speed they might just argue there's no increase in risk.

The latest video from the ‘on track with Tim’ YouTube channel this evening shows the new sleepers being positioned centrally with no obvious sign of space for the previous sand drag.

PS @dodecahedron67 has posted earlier (in the speculation thread about TPRU performance improvements), that the speed is increasing.

This video covers the Huddersfield Viaduct east of the station, the Bradley Junction area and some bridge beam work in Deighton area:

During June, the Transpennine Route between Dewsbury and Leeds will be blocked for the TRU. Does anyone have any knowledge of what work will be going on over this near month period? Thanks.

Are the Huddersfield to York sections of the project still roughly on track?

I obviously appreciate nobody will know exact timelines to share here, but is the current progress looking like those parts will conclude on time?

I believe so. Minor things here and there but overall on target. Progress between Leeds and York certainly ramping up, more wires at Micklefield, most piles now in, I'd go as far as to say most masts are up.

Not as up to date the other side of Leeds as I dont commute it each day.

The most accurate public information is on the Enhancement Delivery Plan, published Quarterly (usually March, June, September, and December). It's available at the bottom of NR's publications page:

From March 2026:

E1 Church Fenton to York, Due April 2026 - On Target.
W3 Huddersfield to Ravensthorpe, Due Feburary 2030 - On target,
W4 Ravensthorpe to Leeds, Due February 2030 - on target,
E2, E3, E4 Leeds to Church Fenton, Due April 2030 - on target.
