Is there any news or plans on the Diggle to Huddersfield section?

I suspect that’s the hard part with the tunnel.
the tunnel is not hard, just more arduous and less pleasant working conditions... But at least it (mostly) stays above freezing temperature!

Is there clearance in the tunnel(s) for electrification? I understand the current bore is double track. would that be big enough?

EDIT:
This NR image suggests it is

Having done more than my fair share of working in tunnels, I would say the working conditions are usually better than out in the open - especially in the Pennines!

The worst part is the dust.

That may be true, but my time in tunnels has generally been when things were, or were expected to be, unpleasant - except on planning visits preparing risk assessments...

and the extra noise from drilling anchor points into the brick or rock for OLE supports being reflected back off the walls and roof
and the (ballast train) diesel exhaust.

My first (Saturday) night shift on the track was in Shugborough tunnel during a track relay in about 1983...

One advantage of Standedge Tunnel is the fact that you can use the other two bores for access via road vehicles. There are dangers as there are dangerous access points to the canal tunnel which is below the rail tunnels and crossed by the double bore live tunnel at the Marsden end.

Near where the 3 ridings meet
In the '90s with 37's, 56's and 47's on the Ballast trains, you could see the fume layer descending.

In that period we used to bring in an observer from Derby Scientifics to monitor the fumes. He had the power to order everybody out while the fumes dissipated.

With newer 66's we could do without the monitor, but placed more emphasis on the use of fans.

That still needed some common sense in the placing and direction of flow.

No use placing a fan pointing West when the air flow is from the West

Isn't it Stalybridge tunnel (668 yards) and especially Scout tunnel nearby (202 yards) which need to be enlarged for OHLE?
They will need extended closures to do.

Presumably the Diggle section now announced is to the inter-zonal boundary at 15m11ch.

It works out as about £4.7M.stkm for electrification and almost £10M/stkm in total. It shows the complexity of wiring/upgrading a line through the industrial Pennines as well as the amount of work needed to update a passenger railway thoroughly, whether diesel or Electric.

Probably the overheads (previously over 50%) are still as high, though. At Least Heidi Alexander is holding her nerve with this project.

Thats what ear defenders are for!

and the (ballast train) diesel exhaust.

There’s ways round that; I’ve certainly had fans on jobs and also instructed idling engines to shut down. (accepting that at some times thats not really feasible).

Philip Haigh reported today on X that the Stalybridge to Diggle work is costed at £225m, and further down notes that the Transport & Works Act is now being submitted. Good to see some progress with the "paperwork" at last.

Is it me or does £18m seem low for a station estimate? Soham cost that for a single platform.

From driving by and from the plans for Mossley. I don't know how £18M fits, but things that might run in favour of keeping the costs down:

I don't think any new land will be needed. There is existing road access roughly where the new station will be.

The site is next to the existing station. So I presume water and power (and bogs) can be rigged up from existing suppliers to use during construction.

And use the current carpark as a construction yard.

And the work on the station is just one chunk of the whole massive scheme.

Presumably there is also a different order of magnitude between the costs of extending existing utility supplies (or redirecting them from the old site to the new on existing railway land) and those of arranging entirely new ones. Will the old car park still be used for the new station - if so, that's something else that doesn't need to be done and paid for. Neither will be the most expensive element of station construction but a collection of "lesser expenses" that don't need to be spent all add up.

From the T&W application, it appears the OHLE can be installed in Stalybridge and Scout tunnels by lowering the track rather than by enlarging the tunnel bores.
That's very good news, and avoids the complications of the Farnworth tunnel rebore on the Bolton line.

I think Farnworth tunnel probably still causes some post traumatic stress for some. Very tough job and wouldn't repeat unless 100% necessary with no other options.

As well as what has already been mentioned, the planning costs are going to be included in the whole scheme so won't be included in the cost for the station

Latest Flickr Robert Stenhouse drone pictures include one of Mirfield progress. Looks like platfirm 1 is almost ready for final surfacing looks with few rollers in use. Apparently laying the new track is due this month.

Scaling the 3 car 158 in the picture a 6 car platform length looks only just.

With scaffold still around the lifts and no sign of platform lighting columns new year opening may be a bit tight.

Re Mirfield. I wonder when Platform 1 track is reconnected in the new Year they will slew the centre track to make platform 2 available at the same time as well as closing Platform 3.

Mirfield P1 re-opens December 27th apparently
So are they going back to the old old way? Plumbing the trains from Huddersfield/Brighouse onto P1. With the from Leeds on P2 and the from wakefield on P3.

Or the old way. With from Huddersfield/Brighouse on P1. From Leeds and wakefield on P3. And fast from Leeds with no platform.

I would have thought that once the revamped Mirfield platform 1 is back in service that it'll be 'old way' for the interim. Won't there be some significant track layout and signalling changes required at Heaton Lodge and Mirfield East junction before West-bound services toward Huddersfield/Calder valley can utilise platform 2 at Mirfield?

Isn’t the current P2 line effectively the P1 line ‘locally’ slewed, ie as far as the signalling is concerned trains are still going through P1. When the real P1 opens, will there even be an accessible track through P2, or just a short disconnected length?

I'm interested in the phasing of works at Ravensthorpe presumably there will be a lot of work over Christmas?

Just from the aerial shots at Mirfield to me it seems that P2 will become temporarily disused until all the other works are done either side, some job! I don't think they will push what I assume is one of (what will be) fast lines back over when they have P3 to use.

After Christmas all three platforms at Mirfield will be operational. Platform 2 will see some limited services, as it always used to. Platform 3 will then shut in 2027. Ravensthorpe is decommissioned at the December timetable change but there isn't much work there over Christmas, the focus is on Mirfield.

I'm quite surprised by that! The planning board must be quite the sight. I assume you will be on the premier service to the reborn P1 :D
