5 years 5 months!!!

I assume because of the massive -14 weeks iirc- closure and diversions with Leeds Neville Hill? Also all the level crossings being closed.
Is Leeds Neville Hill a big change? I always think back to the videos where they blitz a place in a 48-72 hour run when I think about timeframes. Just have to remember that not all projects are like that.

Hopefully someone somewhere has been doing some supply chain planning and has noticed that there's 140 miles of HS2 that will need electrification resource in the not too distant future.
Ooo, good point!

The difference being HS2 will not have trains running, the benefit of new build

It will relieve some constraints, but not others.
  • If the factor limiting construction is the number of hours in possession, then sure, you can work 24 hours a day on HS2.
  • If the limiting factor is the number of qualified and experienced staff available, then they can still only work 8 hour shifts - during the day on HS2 instead of during the night on TRU. Same for design engineering expertise.
  • Similarly, if the constraint is the capacity to manufacture the steelwork and the fittings, especially if there is a requirement for them to be made in the UK.
  • Or, even more likely, the rate at which the Treasury is willing to spend the money. HS2 have been told to slow down spending on phase 1 and push it back into later financial years wherever they can.

On your second point, it does mean that they can work a) without having to spend time getting the equipment out and putting it back every time and b) can work during the day as you say, which is both more productive as it's light and doesn't put people off doing the job!

Must be a risk to NR electrification that HS2 will be offering daytime work which will be more attractive

The HS2 work won't be on a live railway hence opening much of the work (mast bases and mast erecting with no track in place) to much larger pool of people who don't have to have training to work on a live railway or be able to use RRVs. This was useful cost reducer in French, German and Austrian HS new build.

Does that apply under a blockade, or does the existence of track mean RRVs and therefore live railway?

For what it's worth the HS2 electrification contract has gone to Colas, which doesn't clash with the current NR contracts.
But the project work force is probably quite mobile, of course.

None of this is esoteric work and be interesting if we had some bold leadership to put down a challenge to accelerate by 12-24mths how much money would actually be saved by avoiding all the overheads.
The workforce and equipment hours on the ground will be about the same in real terms whether it's done quickly or slowly. Going quickly avoids all the prolongation costs of keeping the management and admin running for a longer period, but incurs extra costs to mobilise more crews, more plant and more or larger bases for them to work from.

Depends on the utilisation of those resources though and i do wonder whether we strike the right balance on access on a job of this scale. I know they have some blockades you do have to wonder though given the investment in getting route knowledge built up for diversionary routes the use of more blockades would see the project delivered quicker without having to overload the supply chain.

I’ve not checked this for a while so I don’t know if anything has changed but will the NLW platform extensions be complete for the December time table change? (will the software be finally updated for LEG to allow all doors to open as well?) Also will the 802s run on Electric in between MCV and SYB from the 15th too.

As far as I am aware the Liverpool to Newcastle services will except for the odd service no longer call at Stalybridge from the new timetable so will remain on diesel from Manchester to York. Some Liverpool to Hull services will be operated by Class 802s so there is a possibility that these services will operate on electric power from Liverpool to Stalybridge.

APCO at Clayton Viaduct for all 802s via Mainline, at Victoria for services via Calder Valley

As changeover either side of the Pennines is to be temporary, does it really matter?

On any of the transpennine routes if there is a large blockade O/H line equipment should be put in after a few years it will all join up. Hope valley comes to mind!

Yes, January 2027 on the face of it seems quite a longtime, but they are making better progress than I originally thought. Great stuff.
