Glossop line was also closed so presuming some works were OHLE that required working on at the junction. Staly is still missing a few sets of metal work both in the station and round the tunnel area. Still plenty to do!

Just released by Network Rail

The Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) has today revealed its strategy to improve the lives of millions of people in the North by:
  • Slashing railway carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 6 million cars off the road for an entire year
  • Creating and safeguarding thousands of jobs for local people and providing tens of thousands of opportunities for new entrants to the industry and young people
  • Delivering more than £4bn in social value and a further £4bn in wellbeing
TRU will bring passengers:
  • More trains to choose from and more seats. Our improvements will enable more trains to run between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York with up to six fast services every hour between Leeds and Manchester and up to two stopping services for local connectivity.
  • Faster journeys so you can travel to your favourite towns and cities more quickly. Our fastest journey times are forecast to be 63-66 minutes between Manchester and York and 41-42 minutes between Manchester and Leeds.
  • More reliable journeys with trains that run on-time
  • Better stations across the Transpennine route, bringing passengers a better travel experience through improved, more accessible station.

Am I right in thinking that this press release is devoid of actual news content? In other words, it does not contain any information that any aspect of the TRU programme has just been, or is about to be, authorised, funded, started or completed?

Sitting at Stalybridge station, it is evident that there is still some steelwork to go up, notably at the east end of the station.
The route to Guide Bridge looks ready for wires except for some of the viaduct section which is still lacking masts.
In fact there are two short lengths of earth wiring already up at the Stalybridge end.
There are a couple of new masts/portals on the Glossop line east of Guide Bridge Jn, and some across the siding area towards Stalybridge.
No doubt these will replace the old LNER portals.

On the Victoria line, once the full wiring starts east of Ashton, I didn't notice any gaps before Victoria.

There are about 5 masts up on the old through line space, but with no portals attached like they are further west along the platforms.
There's probably work on the viaduct to do for that.
P5 needs an end-mast too.

Clicking through I eventually got to the 'sustainability strategy' - although you won't find details of how (or to my mind how much) this will improve the passenger experience, or how much they are spending on sustainability over and above what is required to improve the rail service in a legally complaint way

I think the electrification ends right at the eastern end of the platform, with the changeover point for trains on the move being before the station.
Am I right in thinking that Stalybridge tunnel (just East/Down from the station) is one with particularly tight clearances at present? Wouldn't surprise me if that's one of the last bits wired between Manchester and York.

Where do you buy "social value" and "wellbeing", and who values them at £4 billion each? ;)

I don't know how new they are, but there were posters up at Manchester Victoria today about how TRU will improve services at Newcastle/York/Leeds/Manchester etc.
Maybe it's just that, a PR drive linked to a web site launch.

That was my thought on reading it in full too. Plenty of talky-talky though.

P5 needs an end-mast too.
Wicket keeper type?

Yes, there's a big hole in the ground beyond the P5 buffers, but no mast in it yet.
Overall Stalybridge looks well on the way to completion though, with work still in progress in various places.
The Guide Bridge line looks very odd with the rusty disused 1930s portals interspersed with brand new kit - the former will be removed I assume, once wiring is complete.
There is a big difference in construction styles - the new stuff is so...butch. ;)

Having travelled via Church Fenton today on a Leeds bound train looks like it needs a couple of wire runs at the Jcn to the ECML to complete that side of the layout and presumably same on the Leeds lines. Now im surmising these are the two blocks for Xmas 23 and 24 quoted above to complete this but seems bizarre that the Leeds lines can't be easily electrified now as they have none of the complications of Colton jcn. This would then get TPE working off the juice on at least these lines rather than waiting till early Jan 25. Am i missing something?

In general, you're supposed to have the strategy in place *before* you start building things. It's how you justify getting the money you want to spend. So with the greatest of respect to my comms counterparts... what a load of tosh :)

I passed through the new White Rose Station site yesterday. What looks like most of a platform is up on the southbound (Up Huddersfield?) side, in metal, with a metal back wall where the shelter would be. It looked very narrow to me, even with it being on a viaduct. It must be whatever the latest minimum depth is though...

I would imagine considering things like the following:
  • quicker journeys allow to leave home later and arrive back earlier - 20 mins more with the family is somehow valued
  • quieter trains improving the life of railway neighbours by disturbing them less
  • non polluting (from the engine) trains improving the life of railway neighbours by less risk to their health
  • maybe nicer on board experience reducing stress for customers
This type of stuff ticks a few corporate boxes...

What's left to do at stalybridge and both lines to manchester as just seen the video saying that the stalybridge to manchester lines are now fully electrified, and the station is closed this weekend for improvement works.

According to #6457, the wires are (considered) live to Baguley Fold NS, from 9 April, presumably for testing.

Is there a timescale for completion of testing and signing this off for use by bi-modes?

There are no wires in Stalybridge station and on the approaches from Ashton and Guide Bridge (bar a couple of earth wires on the latter).
There is missing steelwork on these sections too.
And of course the wires that are up are not energised east of Baguley Fold.
Looks like a few months' work yet.

Batley - Former Adwalton line at Lady Anne crossing.

Still grading the embankment and footpath.

With the new footbridge in place, the work appears to be focused on the Adwalton embankment and where the new stepped access will be.

Does that indicate that it will just be electrification with no new track work?
The application was discussed somewhere upthread when open for consultation, and was mainly about bridges and level crossings. Its website is here. I don't think there was anything about extra tracks.

The main application for a TWAO is yet to come and according to the page I've just linked will be submitted this summer.

An intriguing element for which we have not yet seen details is "reconstruction" of the viaduct at Kirkgate and Marsh Lane, Leeds. Presumably that's for structural condition, not extra tracks.

Or realignment of the existing tracks to allow for a greater linespeed when departing/approaching Leeds.

The new Colton Jn MPTSC (part of the ECPSU Phase 2 Works) has entered service.

The REAL Power Supply Upgrade has successfully entered into service the site at Colton in Week 7. This site features the first Mid-Point Track Sectioning Cabinet (MPTSC) on Phase 2 of the East Coast Main Line (ECML) Power Supply Upgrade (PSU) and supports delivery of ‘Power to Newcastle’ for the new timetable.

Colton Junction is a critical substation in a strategic location for both the REAL Alliance and Network Rail. It replaces the existing Colton Junction TSC, and includes four additional circuit breakers which will also feed the new electrification for the Leeds Line on TRU in its final state.

The work has not come without challenges. Possession and access times have been limited leading to significant integration requirements of multiple projects. The site is also the first substation on the new Telecoms network installed within the first section of PSU 2 geography. Well done and thank you to the teams involved.

The embankment looks to have had a final grading. A series of traffic cones in play to protect recently bored fence post holes.

On the Adwalton embankment, they have started the process to fit the stepped access.

Was that the original TSC in the top-left picture?

Either way I've not seen a sectioning cabin painted something other than grey before.
Yes, that's the original. The ECML north of Donny had a habit of painting the TSCs and FSs green. Every legacy building north of Hambleton is green AFAIK.
