VT introduced them in 2006 IIRC, but not very long ago..

Fair dos, I knew there were ones from Carlisle to Glasgow and Edinburgh, but not Preston.

As for upgrading on non-flexible tickets, I've done so before as well. Mind, this was when FGW's Forward scheme was still going and I had vouchers for free upgrades. Wouldn't bother now with the absolutely awful seats they use now on FGW. Would be willing to do it on many other TOCs, but not FGW.

Well many TOCs say that you can't, but in reality i have done so myself with other TOCs who say the same thing..

It depends on how busy the train is and on the guard.

A NXEC guard was encouraging people on AP to upgrade on the 1950 GLC-YRK the other week (which I did from GLC-EDB), it would have been quite empty in FC so it made sense.

This varies quite a bit.

For National Fares Manual 98 [January - May 2008], NXEC and VWC said Advance purchase ticket holders may not upgrade, SWT excluded Apex, SuperAdvance and special promotions, FGW had different rules for the old Network SouthEast area and other journeys, while EMT, FSR, 'one' and TPE were open to all comers. XC were silent.

in the current NFM 99, SWT and XC exclude Advance tickets, NXEC and VWC sell upgrades to Advance ticket holders on the train only, and the other 5 long-distance TOCs are unchanged.

It's hard to keep up!

NXEC now upgrade any ticket to weekend first but costs are up, 20 and 25 quid depending on where you are going.

Also weekend first can only be bought on the train now. Travel Centres don't issue them.

Quite so! Had always been under the impression it was a Saver Return for that journey! When I eventually do a North West rover, I might be able to find use for that fare.
